Dr. Alka Dubey, a senior scientist at the Bombay Natural History Society, highlighted that the state has experienced a severe contraction in vulture numbers over recent years. Approximately five years ago, their count hovered between 700 and 800, which has now plummeted to a meager 200 to 300 individuals. Vultures are recognized as vital avian species essential for maintaining ecological balance. A reduction in their numbers can trigger cascading negative effects on natural equilibrium, making urgent conservation efforts an absolute necessity.
Suitable Environment at Kanpur Zoo and Eight Species
Experts point out that the Kanpur Zoo offers a highly conducive environment for vulture breeding and habitation. The zoo grounds span a large area complemented by ample greenery. Several other wildlife species have continuously bred within this campus with commendable reproduction rates.
