Police have apprehended Shakeel, an accused carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 who had been absconding since the disaster, following an encounter with security personnel. The arrest came shortly after civil authorities deployed bulldozers to demolish his illegal five-room residential building in Mahmudpur Manauri village. Following his capture, a video surfaced showing the suspect seeking forgiveness from the victims' families with folded hands.
Bulldozer Action on Illegal Structure and Police Operation
Heavy security and administrative teams arrived in Mahmudpur Manauri village, located within the Pipri police station limits near the Prayagraj-Kaushambi border. Authorities targeted a five-room house owned by Shakeel, constructed at a cost of lakhs of rupees. According to officials, the residential structure was built without an approved blueprint from the Prayagraj Development Authority. After the authority formally declared the construction illegal, bulldozers were brought in to level the building. The exercise drew large crowds from nearby areas, creating a tense atmosphere for several hours.
Ancestral Property and Family Background
The demolished building served as the ancestral home of the accused family. Initially, prime accused Naushad lived in the same five-room property with his family. Naushad later constructed a separate residence elsewhere and shifted there, leaving Shakeel and his family to reside in the ancestral house. The demolition completely reduced the valuable property to rubble as part of administrative measures following the tragedy.
Arrest Following Confrontation and Public Apology
Following the demolition operation, police tracked down Shakeel, who had been on the run since the blast. Security forces intercepted him, leading to a police encounter in which the fugitive carrying a cash reward was captured. In a video recorded shortly after his arrest, a visibly distraught Shakeel expressed remorse with folded hands toward the families of those who lost their lives in the explosion. He asked for forgiveness from the bereaved families, noting that his home had been demolished and his family displaced.
