A major illicit narcotics operation was dismantled in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, following a targeted enforcement action against the unauthorized trade of pharmaceutical drugs. The Kanpur unit of the Anti Narcotics Task Force conducted an operation at a residential property warehouse in TP Nagar, located within the Babupurwa police station jurisdiction in Dhakanapurwa. Officials uncovered a massive cache of codeine-based cough syrup bottles concealed on the premises. A total of 25,000 bottles, carrying an estimated illicit market valuation of approximately Rs 2.95 crore, were impounded on site. An individual overseeing the consignment was apprehended during the raid.
Storage Yielded 2,500 Liters of Banned Formulation
According to information provided by Ainuddin, head of the Anti Narcotics Task Force Kanpur unit, along with his operational squad, the confiscated syrup carried the brand packaging 'TURBO-T'. A physical inventory confirmed 25,000 individual bottles, translating to roughly 2,500 liters of the intoxicating liquid. The magnitude of this recovery indicates that Kanpur was functioning as a critical transit depot for distribution across regional consumer markets. In response to the scale of the haul, investigators have extended the inquiry beyond the storage facility to determine the original manufacturing point, transit passages, and logistical channels deployed to move the freight.
Fake Waybills Exploited a New Delhi Firm Identity
The suspect detained at the facility was identified as Mihir Kumar Thakur, a native of Madhubani district in Bihar. Preliminary verification indicated that the consignment was booked and transported under the pretense of legitimate commercial cargo. The suspect allegedly generated fraudulent paperwork and forged transport waybills using the registered corporate identity of a business entity located in New Delhi. Through this method, the commercial transit escaped routine scrutiny during interstate transit. Enforcing authorities are currently examining whether the New Delhi enterprise had direct involvement or whether its operational details and identity were misused without permission.
Consignments Bound for Prayagraj and Varanasi Hubs
Interrogation records and tactical intelligence show that the warehouse served as an intermediate collection hub rather than an end-user market. From the TP Nagar site, shipments were broken down and redirected toward eastern Uttar Pradesh, specifically feeding local syndicates across Prayagraj and Varanasi. Investigative teams are now charting the entire chain of retail handlers, transport operators, and secondary distributors active along this route. Officers are also reviewing the specific transportation networks and freight carriers contracted to dispatch the syrup cartons to downline handlers.
NDPS Act Invoked as Digital Evidence Undergoes Review
During the raid, officers seized an Android smartphone along with Rs 1,400 in cash from Thakur's possession. An official criminal case under the statutory provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Babupurwa police station. Forensic investigators are analyzing the digital data, communication archives, and financial transactions recorded on the seized handheld device to trace upstream suppliers and downstream buyers. Inquiries are progressing to determine how many identical consignments had been handled previously and whether additional clandestine storage units operate in Kanpur.
