Political tension has escalated in Uttar Pradesh following administrative action to demolish a structure used as a mosque inside the Saharanpur Collectorate campus. Bahujan Samaj Party supreme leader Mayawati raised strong objections to the ongoing drive, calling on the state government to immediately halt the hasty designation and demolition of religious structures across the state. The former Chief Minister emphasized that the administration must avoid arbitrary measures and instead rely on lawful avenues and dialogue to settle such sensitive disputes. She also criticized the practice of pulling down the houses of accused individuals, calling it an unjust form of collective punishment against innocent families.

In a detailed statement shared on X, Mayawati expressed concern over what she described as a rushed government drive to declare religious sites illegal and tear them down, specifically pointing to the recent events in Saharanpur district. She stated that executing demolitions in such a hurried manner creates widespread distress and damages social harmony. According to her, the state authority should refrain from pursuing aggressive measures that fuel public discontent and should instead explore alternative solutions that respect both legal boundaries and public sentiment.
Constitutional Duty and Call for Communal Harmony
Highlighting constitutional principles, the BSP leader reminded the government of its secular obligation to treat all religious communities and their places of worship with equal respect. She noted that under Indian traditions and constitutional guarantees, protecting religious sites is a duty owed to all citizens. Mayawati pointed out that in Islam, mosques are integral to daily prayers and regular congregational worship. Respecting these religious institutions aligns with broad national interest and helps preserve long-standing traditions of peaceful coexistence. She argued that demolishing a dwelling without adhering to proper rules and exhaustive legal proceedings inflicts collective punishment on an entire family, leaving innocent relatives homeless and distraught. Recalling her own tenure in government, she advocated for establishing the 'rule of law by law' rather than taking punitive shortcuts. Background of the Saharanpur Collectorate Mosque Case
The controversy centers on a mosque located on the premises of the Saharanpur Collectorate. Following an administrative inquiry, the City Magistrate court ruled on July 17 that the structure constituted an illegal encroachment on government land. The court issued a demolition order and imposed a compensation penalty of approximately Rs 6.41 crore for unauthorized occupation and land usage. An appeal filed against the judgment was subsequently dismissed. On September 4, the District Judge court upheld the lower court's findings, clearing the legal path for the local administration to proceed with the clearance operation under heavy security.
Administrative Stance and Security Deployments
In response to potential law and order challenges, local authorities have deployed significant security forces across the city. Saharanpur DIG Abhishek Singh stated that the judicial authority confirmed the land's status after thorough verification of land records and legal procedures. He added that extra companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been positioned in sensitive areas and identified hotspots. Authorities are also actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation or inflammatory content, reiterating that the enforcement is being carried out in strict compliance with court directions.
