Thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit the holy town of Chitrakoot every day, with a significant proportion arriving via private vehicles and road transport. To cater to this increasing traffic volume and strengthen connectivity with neighboring districts, the administration has set in motion plans to widen the strategic Shivrampur-Pahadi road. This infrastructure upgrade aims to eliminate severe traffic bottlenecks, reduce travel duration significantly, and offer a smooth transit corridor for long-distance commuters as well as local residents.
Project Scope and Existing Infrastructure Challenges
The Shivrampur-Pahadi stretch spans approximately 19.50 kilometers, and the comprehensive upgrade is estimated to cost Rs 80.92 crore. At present, the carriageway width ranges between merely 3 and 3.5 meters. Due to heavy daily traffic and wear and tear, several patches along the route have developed deep potholes, presenting severe safety risks and operational delays for motorists. Under the proposed modernization plan, the main asphalt carriageway will be expanded to a uniform 7 meters. Including the paved shoulders on either side, the total road width will reach roughly 10 meters, offering ample room for two-way traffic movement without bottlenecks.
Strategic Bypass Value and Regional Highway Connectivity
Beyond connecting Shivrampur to Pahadi, this vital corridor acts as a major regional link toward Rajapur, Kaushambi, and Prayagraj. The route functions as an essential bypass for the Chitrakoot district headquarters. Whenever no-entry restrictions are imposed on heavy commercial vehicles within city limits, freight trucks and heavy traffic are redirected along this bypass toward Pahadi, Rajapur, Kaushambi, and Prayagraj. Widening the road will keep commercial traffic moving efficiently while drastically reducing congestion inside the town core. Additionally, it provides direct, seamless access to the market for numerous rural habitations located along the belt.
PWD Priority Status and Interim Repair Work
Chitrakoot District Magistrate Pulkit Garg confirmed that the project has been placed at the top of the Public Works Department (PWD) action plan for the current fiscal year. The formal proposal covering the 19-kilometer section with a budget allocation of nearly Rs 80 crore has been forwarded to the state administration, with official approval expected shortly. Recognizing that commuters need immediate relief prior to the commencement of full-scale construction, the administration has directed PWD officials to execute instant temporary repairs. PWD teams have been instructed to fill existing potholes immediately using Granular Sub-Base (GSB) and standard road-repair materials to maintain smooth transit in the interim.
