Voter lists in Uttar Pradesh have triggered a massive political storm after the Election Commission took swift and stringent action over glaring discrepancies found in the Pilibhit Sadar seat electoral rolls. With errors detected in the names of 13,150 voters, authorities moved quickly to penalize officials, drawing intense political reactions and fierce verbal duels between opposition parties and the ruling establishment.
Election Commission and District Administration Action
In response to the severe lapses discovered in the Pilibhit Sadar assembly constituency voter list, the election authorities removed two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and a Voter Registration Centre (VRC) operator from election duties. Formal police cases have been registered against them at the local police station. The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh directed the district collector to conduct a detailed and thorough probe into the entire episode, while also issuing strict directives to immediately rectify all identified errors in the voter database.
Official Directives from the Chief Electoral Officer
Amidst the escalating developments, the official X handle of the CEO Uttar Pradesh posted that strict legal action will be initiated against both current and former Electoral Registration Officers in connection with the irregularities uncovered in assembly constituency 127-Pilibhit. In addition to legal proceedings, clear directives have been issued to launch departmental inquiries against both EROs. Furthermore, the services of the computer assistant at the voter registration center are set to be terminated. The official update regarding these measures was shared on social media.
Congress Frontal Attack on the Election Commission
Since the issue of the Pilibhit voter list discrepancies was originally raised by the Congress party, the party intensified its pressure on the poll panel immediately following the announcement of disciplinary actions. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Aradhana Mishra launched a scathing attack, declaring that the Election Commission has been completely exposed. Mishra alleged that the election body is still trying to conceal vital facts and that the EROs are being unnecessarily made scapegoats. She questioned how the officers could be held culpable for database discrepancies when they lacked direct access to the underlying software.
Akhilesh Yadav Alleges Wider Electoral Scams
Following the Congress statements, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also jumped into the political fray. He asserted that the detected irregularities represent merely a small sample, claiming that the broader voter manipulation scam is substantially larger. Yadav stated that while name tampering has now been formally proven, the Election Commission will soon be forced to provide answers regarding duplicate voters as well. These developments follow recent high-profile political discussions held by opposition leaders concerning electoral strategies in the state.
BJP Dismisses Allegations as Routine Clerical Errors
As Akhilesh Yadav repeatedly invoked the ruling party and characterized the incident as a deliberate conspiracy, state minister Jaiveer Singh offered a strong rebuttal on behalf of the government. Singh stated that Akhilesh Yadav should refrain from sensationalizing routine clerical mistakes for political mileage. He maintained that minor name discrepancies in voter lists are common occurrences and that all such issues will be successfully resolved well ahead of the elections. Singh added that the opposition will gain no political advantage from constructing false narratives surrounding vote theft.
