A scene reminiscent of a Bollywood film unfolded in Sandi town, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday evening when an inebriated man climbed to the top of a water tank, causing a major public spectacle. The man was protesting against the refusal of his wife's family to send her home, and he remained perched on the structure, insisting that his wife and son be brought to him immediately. Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene and successfully managed to bring the man down safely after an hour-long operation.
Root Cause and Domestic Conflict
The conflict stems from a marriage that took place four years ago between Payal, daughter of Munshiganj resident Mukesh Saini, and Hariom, also known as Raja, a resident of Shahabad. Despite having a son together, the couple faced severe domestic issues. According to family members, Hariom suffers from a substance addiction and frequently subjected his wife, Payal, to physical abuse. He allegedly pressured her to bring money from her maternal home, leading Payal to seek refuge at her father's house along with their young son to escape the constant harassment.
The Water Tank Protest
Hariom had arrived in Sandi in a state of intoxication on Thursday and spent the entire day wandering around. By Friday evening, he climbed the water tank located near Indira Park. From the heights of the tank, he shouted demands for his wife and son to be sent to him. A large crowd gathered below, and due to his disoriented state, there was significant fear that he might fall or harm himself. The town's police in-charge, Shubham Singh, led a team to the location. They engaged with the man and, after an hour of intense effort, managed to persuade him to descend. Following the incident, the police initiated legal action against him for disturbing the peace.
