A severe late night altercation broke out at an eatery in the Swaroop Nagar area of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after staff members declined to provide hookah to a group of men. The confrontation quickly spilled out onto the street, leading to physical assault, torn clothing of workers, and lewd remarks directed at young women visiting the venue. Following an inquiry that reviewed security camera footage, the department suspended two policemen who were found prima facie guilty of participating in the brawl.
Dispute Ignites Over Refusal of Hookah Service
According to eyewitnesses, four men arrived at Turnon restaurant in Swaroop Nagar in a car around 2:30 AM on Saturday night. Upon entering, they demanded hookah service from the staff. When the workers refused to supply it, a heated verbal exchange began. The visitors allegedly turned abusive and began physically assaulting the workers when they objected to the foul language.
The physical confrontation escalated rapidly, moving from inside the establishment directly onto the public road. The employees were reportedly beaten up, and their clothes were ripped during the struggle. Witnesses noted that the commotion lasted from around 2:30 AM until 3:00 AM, spanning nearly half an hour. During this period, several bystanders captured the ongoing chaos on their mobile phones.
Harassment of Women Arriving to Collect Phone
While the altercation was underway, a few young women arrived at the eatery to retrieve a misplaced mobile phone. The men involved in the ruckus allegedly passed vulgar and offensive remarks at them, further worsening the chaotic and tense situation at the scene. The CCTV cameras installed at the restaurant premises recorded key sequences of the incident, which later became central to the police inquiry.
Role of Sub Inspector and Escort Constable Under Scrutiny
Subsequent information revealed that among the four men involved, one was a sub inspector posted at a police station in the Central Zone, while another served as an escort constable to ACP Ghatampur Krishnakant. Two other civilian companions were accompanying them. Eyewitness accounts indicated that during the chaos, the escort constable attempted to exert influence by calling the Swaroop Nagar outpost in-charge and local police to the scene. However, all four men fled before the police team could arrive.
Police Department Orders Immediate Suspension
Taking immediate note of the incident, DCP Central Atul Kumar Srivastava assigned an official inquiry to ACP Swaroop Nagar Jyoti Shri. Senior officials had made it clear that strict disciplinary measures would follow if the allegations against the police personnel were verified.
