A tense scene unfolded at a police outpost in Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, after a young woman walked in carrying a licensed double-barrel shotgun. In the Partawal outpost area under the Shyamdeurwa police station's jurisdiction, officers were caught off guard when the visibly distressed woman, in tears, alleged that her family members had assaulted her and pleaded for police help. The moment they spotted the weapon in her hand, the policemen on duty snapped into high alert.
Officers stayed calm to defuse the standoff
Realising how serious the situation could turn, the police chose not to corner or pressure the woman. Instead, they listened to her patiently first, then slowly worked to gain her trust before attempting to take the shotgun off her. After a prolonged effort to reason with her, officers finally managed to get the licensed weapon into their custody. As a precaution, a Dial 112 emergency response team was also called to the spot. Even after the gun was secured, the outpost remained tense for a while, and it took considerable effort from the police to finally calm the woman down.
A land registry dispute that turned violent
Initial questioning revealed the root cause to be a family dispute tied to a land registry matter. The family had reportedly been at odds over the registration of a piece of land for some time. The disagreement recently spilled into a heated argument at home, which escalated into physical violence. Angered and hurt by the assault, the woman picked up the licensed shotgun and went straight to the police outpost. The weapon, it turned out, was originally licensed in the name of her great-grandfather and later passed down, through inheritance, to her grandfather. Police also learned that the woman's father is one of two brothers in the family, and the family has two daughters.
Police promise a fair probe and legal action
Police have taken the woman's complaint, along with her concerns about her own safety, seriously. Officials have assured that the case will be investigated impartially and that appropriate legal action will follow once the facts are established. Investigators are now examining the underlying cause of the family dispute, the land-related documents, and the current ownership status of the licensed shotgun, among other angles. The situation at the outpost has since been brought under control, though it will only become clear once the investigation concludes who bore what responsibility in the family conflict and what legal steps will follow.
