Nestled in the Bageshwar region of Uttarakhand, Kafni Glacier is internationally renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery and tranquil environment. The snow-clad Himalayan peaks and serene atmosphere naturally draw mountain lovers and trekking enthusiasts from across the globe, but the walking trail leading up to the glacier has fallen into a state of severe disrepair, turning the journey into a hazardous endeavor. Travelers are currently forced to navigate through heavily broken pathways and thick overgrowth of grass and bushes, creating a constant risk of accidents during the trek.
Expressing serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the trail, well-known Uttarakhand trekking guide Jeetu Danu and Nainital nature lover Chandan Nyal have highlighted the mounting dangers. They pointed out that multiple segments of the route are severely compromised, while rampant vegetation makes navigation exceptionally difficult, forcing visitors to proceed with extreme caution. Navigating mountainous terrain requires secure pathways, and even minor lapses in concentration on narrow and broken tracks can lead to severe accidents. This proves especially challenging for tourists who lack prior experience in high-altitude trekking and navigating difficult mountain paths.
Within the Bageshwar district, both Pindari and Kafni glaciers serve as primary trekking destinations. While Pindari Glacier attracts massive crowds due to its immense popularity, the trail leading to Kafni presents distinct challenges owing to its rugged terrain. Trekking guide Jeetu Danu notes that while the natural beauty of the Kafni region is undeniably captivating, the journey to reach it is equally demanding. The majestic Himalayan peaks and pristine environment offer visitors a unique experience, but the dilapidated state of the path significantly elevates the risk for anyone seeking to witness this beauty firsthand.
In response to these hazards, Jeetu Danu and Chandan Nyal have strongly urged the state government and relevant departments to conduct a thorough inspection of the Kafni Glacier track. They emphasized that damaged sections must be repaired immediately and overgrown bushes cleared to ensure a secure route, which would ease traveler movement and reduce trekking hazards. They noted that Bageshwar holds immense potential for adventure tourism, which could generate vital employment for local youth through guiding, homestays, and allied tourism ventures, provided tourist safety and basic infrastructure are prioritized.
Meanwhile, taking swift cognizance of the situation, Bageshwar District Magistrate Apoorva Pandey has deployed dedicated administrative teams to all three major glaciers in the district. These teams departed on October 16 to inspect Pindari, Sundardhunga, and Kafni, where they will evaluate the routes on-ground and submit a comprehensive report to the government so that repair and restoration work can be initiated accordingly.
