Farmers in Uttarakhand will soon have new avenues to generate income from barren and less fertile lands. The rural development department is actively preparing to promote bamboo cultivation across the state, adopting a model similar to the northeastern states. Alongside growing bamboo, the initiative encompasses manufacturing various commercial goods derived from it, creating a comprehensive economic cycle.
Involving Women Through Self-Help Groups
A core component of this scheme involves integrating women associated with self-help groups. These women will receive specialized training to craft decorative items, utensils, and everyday utility goods out of bamboo. The department anticipates that this approach will generate fresh employment opportunities in villages, effectively supplementing the earnings of both farmers and rural women.
Pilot Projects Rolled Out Across Every District
Rural Development Minister Bharat Choudhary stated that a bamboo pilot project has been initiated in every district of the state. At the Uttarakhand Institute of Rural Development in Rudrapur, bamboo saplings are being planted across two acres of land, serving as both a commercial nursery and a functional laboratory. Women from self-help groups will learn to make handicrafts, eco-friendly utensils, decorative items, and daily-use goods. By selling these finished products in the market, women can enhance their income, aligning with the departmental objective to help women achieve the status of Lakhpati Didi.
A Viable Alternative for Unproductive Land
The department encourages farmers to cultivate bamboo on barren and low-fertility plots where conventional crop yields remain low. This allows cultivators to utilize land parcels that usually go waste. Bamboo farming is being promoted as a low-investment option capable of delivering sustained financial returns over a prolonged period.
Expanding Rural Employment and Reducing Forest Dependency
The overarching plan aims to expand rural employment through bamboo production and allied manufacturing activities. The department expects this to stimulate local economic activity while simultaneously reducing the local population's reliance on surrounding forests. Authorities have laid out plans to scale up this operational model over the next five years to strengthen bamboo production and related enterprises throughout the state.
