The political atmosphere in Uttarakhand has intensified significantly after legal action was initiated against senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. An FIR has been registered against him at the Haldwani Kotwali police station based on a formal complaint filed by a Dalit youth. The registration of this case has triggered a war of words between rival political factions in the state. The entire controversy stems from a sequence of events following a public rally addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the subsequent reactions that followed.
Details of the Complaint and Legal Sections
According to official information, a local resident belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, Amit Kumar, approached the Haldwani Kotwali with a formal complaint against Rahul Gandhi. Acting on this complaint, the police booked the senior Congress leader under sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, along with section 3(1) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The complainant alleged that statements made by Rahul Gandhi severely hurt the sentiments of the Scheduled Caste community and created an environment of social tension.
Origins of the Purification Yajna Controversy
The controversy traces back to August 8, following a public rally organized by the Congress party in Haldwani. After the conclusion of the event, reports emerged regarding heavy littering at the Ramlila Maidan and alleged chanting of communal slogans by certain individuals. Registering a strong protest against these incidents and seeking to restore ritual purity to the venue, a local right-wing Hindu organization conducted a 'purification yajna' at the Ramlila Maidan on August 8 itself.
In the wake of this ritual, Rahul Gandhi expressed strong resentment and publicly labeled the purification yajna as anti-Dalit. This remark triggered massive political uproar, including intense disruptions inside Parliament, where Rahul Gandhi continuously demanded that criminal cases be registered over the matter. In response, the Congress party retaliated by linking the entire episode to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge belonging to the Dalit community, accusing the ruling party of orchestration.
The Congress party maintained that the yajna and the subsequent protests were part of a calculated political conspiracy designed to target marginalized communities. The registration of the case under stringent provisions has now raised political stakes in the state.
Police Investigation and Administrative Stance
Following the formal filing of the case under the SC/ST Act against Rahul Gandhi, the political temperature across Uttarakhand has surged. Local police and administrative officials stated that a formal investigation into the matter has been initiated based on the received complaint and available evidence. Authorities noted that further legal steps will be determined strictly in accordance with the findings of the ongoing police probe.
