An acute water shortage has hit Dehradun during the festive season, compounding hardships for residents across the capital city. For the past 10 days, taps in the Banjarawala and Mathurawala areas have either completely run dry or are supplying heavily contaminated and muddy water. With relatives visiting for the festival, the disruption in basic water supply has created a distressing situation for local families. Narrow lanes in the neighbourhoods have added to the woes, preventing water tankers from reaching homes that desperately need supplies.
Forced to Drink Contaminated Water Amid Health Fears
Local residents report that they are being forced to consume impure water, raising serious concerns about potential waterborne illnesses. Ramवती, a local resident, stated that the water flowing from taps contains visible insects, making it entirely unfit for consumption. Highlighting financial constraints, she noted that they lack the funds needed to install an RO water purifier. Echoing similar concerns, सुनीता (Sunita) explained that the water is unusable for drinking or washing dishes, while laundering clothes in the muddy supply ruins the fabric altogether. She questioned how daily wage earners would afford medical treatment if their children fell sick from drinking the contaminated supply.
Festive Plans Cancelled as Relatives Turn Away
The severity of the water crisis has disrupted traditional festive gatherings and celebrations. निर्मला देवी (Nirmala Devi) shared that the shortage is hitting hardest during Diwali, noting that her own poor health and knee pain make it impossible for her to haul heavy buckets of water from distant sources. Due to the severe scarcity, she had to ask visiting relatives not to come over for the festival. रुचि रावत (Ruchi Rawat), the local councillor for Banjarawala, pointed out that while minor supply issues persisted for a year, the taps have remained completely dry for the last 10 days. She questioned why utility bills continue to be dispatched when the department fails to provide any water.
Thousands of Families Affected as Local Representatives Intervene
Mathurawala councillor सोबत सिंह (Sobat Singh) stated that thousands of families across Ward 84, Ward 85, and adjacent areas connected to the cantonment are struggling for water. He emphasized that solutions exist if officials and their teams proactively carry out their duties. Social worker वीर सिंह पंवार (Veer Singh Pawar) added that persistent shortages plague the region, and he has been running between government offices to secure basic water access for impoverished residents who are currently left with no option but to consume muddy water.
Authorities Acknowledge Crisis and Promise Pipe Network Fixes
Addressing the situation, Jatin Singh Saini, Project Manager at the Uttarakhand Urban Sector Development Agency, acknowledged that the area historically faced water supply challenges. He explained that old pipelines were recently replaced with new lines, though certain zones continue to experience disruptions and saturation issues. Authorities have inspected the affected pockets and are coordinating with the Jal Sansthan to ensure residents do not face hardships during the festive period.
