The meteorological center in Dehradun has issued alerts for torrential rainfall across multiple districts on September 5. Persistent downpours over the past three days have swollen rivers and triggered continuous rockfalls from destabilized slopes, compounding difficulties for residents and travelers alike.
Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Dehradun, Nainital, and Other Districts
According to the latest weather forecasts, heavy to very heavy spells are expected in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Nainital, Champawat, Bageshwar, Uttarkashi, and Udham Singh Nagar on September 5. Furthermore, thunderous clouds, lightning strikes, and intense showers are predicted across all thirteen districts of the state. The continuous rainfall has driven maximum temperatures down, bringing a noticeable chill to both hill stations and plain areas alike.
Blocked Roads and Cut-off Villages in Chamoli and Pithoragarh
The situation remains particularly challenging in the border districts. In Chamoli, relentless rain over the past seventy-two hours has caused massive boulders and debris to crash onto the Badrinath National Highway near Nandprayag, halting all movement for pilgrims and locals. Although mechanical excavators from the highway authorities are deployed at the site, falling stones continue to hamper clearance operations. Additionally, the Gopeshwar-Chopta motor road and the Lisa Factory bypass have suffered cave-ins, paralyzing vehicular traffic. In Pithoragarh, sixteen vital roads have been blocked by debris, severing connectivity to dozens of remote villages and stranding residents.
School Closures in Nainital and High Alert in the Plains
Anticipating severe weather and landslide risks, local administrations have swung into action. In Nainital, the district administration declared a holiday for all government and private schools as well as Anganwadi centers up to class twelve on September 5 to ensure student safety. Police and disaster response teams remain stationed along vulnerable mountain slopes. Meanwhile, in the plains of Udham Singh Nagar, including Rudrapur and Kashipur, heavy downpours threaten to cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. A similar alert for intense downpours remains in place for September 7 across Nainital, बागेश्वर, Udham Singh Nagar, Pauri, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning are forecasted to continue across numerous locations in the hill and plain districts through September 8, 9, and 10.
