Political friction within the Uttarakhand Congress has surfaced openly following a sharp internal conflict surrounding veteran leader Harish Rawat. The former chief minister has found himself at the center of attention over his ongoing outreach tour, conducted under the banner of a gratitude campaign. Despite formal warnings from the central party leadership advising caution regarding the tour, Rawat appears unwilling to back down from his stance. To present his version of events, the senior leader is traveling to Delhi to meet the top brass.
According to scheduled engagements, Rawat will hold discussions with state in-charge Selja in Delhi, followed by a crucial meeting with party general secretary K C Venugopal on Thursday. The friction is underscored by the timing of these meetings: the interaction between Rawat and Selja was arranged in Delhi precisely while Selja was present in Uttarakhand. This sequence of logistical maneuvers highlights the escalating distance between the state apparatus and the veteran leadership.
Ground Mobilization Across Haridwar and Kumaon
Deciphering the sudden assertiveness displayed by Harish Rawat requires an examination of prevailing equations inside the state organization. Rawat has organized his mass-contact drive across the key districts of Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar. Following a massive reception in the Ramnagar constituency within Nainital district, Rawat noted publicly that the affection and trust shown by local residents had strengthened his resolve to advocate vigorously for the interests and dignity of Uttarakhand.
While Rawat continues to rally loyal workers on the ground, several party functionaries have expressed grave reservations about his unilateral campaign. A vocal section of Congress leaders has described these maneuvers as detrimental to overall organizational unity, warning that parallel shows of strength risk damaging the electoral prospects of the outfit.
The Stakes in Haridwar and the Khanpur Battleground
The core tension of this feud lies primarily within Haridwar district, a terrain historically advantageous for the Congress party. Out of 11 assembly segments in the district, Congress currently holds 5 seats. These include Haridwar Rural, represented by Harish Rawat's daughter Anupama as the local legislator. Yet, Rawat's immediate political focus has shifted squarely toward the Khanpur constituency.
Khanpur is presently represented by independent legislator Umesh Kumar, who ran a covert sting operation against Rawat in 2016 during his tenure as chief minister, an episode that precipitated a grave governmental crisis for the dispensation. Over recent months, reports have emerged indicating growing proximity between Kumar and specific Congress leaders. A prominent faction spanning from the All India Congress Committee down to the Pradesh Congress Committee is actively seeking entry for Kumar, a development that Rawat opposes unequivocally.
Public Posturing, Viral Images, and Poster Fallout
Rawat has explicitly stated his intention to contest elections from Haridwar district and has directed his entourage into Khanpur, where his loyalists argue that political momentum favors the party. The standoff spilled further into public view after photographs showing Umesh Kumar presenting a floral bouquet to state in-charge Selja circulated widely on social media platforms.
Tensions flared again with the appearance of controversial posters demanding the removal of Selja as state in-charge, though the origin and authorship of the campaign remain unverified. For his part, Rawat articulated his stance forcefully without directly naming individuals, pointing out that someone who acted as the primary instrument in toppling an elected government in 2016 is now being lionized by reckless figures inside the party. He observed that the individual responsible for pushing the organization out of power in the state for an entire decade is bizarrely being turned into a hero by certain leaders today.
