Residents of Phulwari-Khaidhar village in Bageshwar have been locked in a prolonged struggle demanding the construction of a proper motorable road in their area. The persistent lack of basic road connectivity has triggered deep frustration among the locals, who have expressed severe displeasure over the perceived inaction of the government and local administration. To press for their long-standing demand, the villagers have been staging a continuous sit-in protest directly within the village for the past 31 days.
A local resident and former captain, Ratan Dev, stated that the ongoing demonstration will not be called off until the government provides a fully satisfactory response regarding the initiation of road construction. He emphasized that the protest stems entirely from a genuine local need rather than any political motivation.
Daily Hardships Caused by Lack of Infrastructure
According to villager Jyoti Danu, the absence of a road has severely disrupted daily life, heavily impacting healthcare access, educational pursuits, and essential travel for everyone in the region. This lack of transport infrastructure places an especially heavy burden on patients, senior citizens, women, and school-going children. When someone falls seriously ill or faces a medical emergency, transporting them safely to a hospital becomes an immense challenge.
Risks During Monsoon and Connectivity Issues
Villagers frequently have to rely entirely on narrow walking tracks to get around, and children face daily commuting hurdles. During the monsoon season, conditions deteriorate significantly as these footpaths become slippery and waterlogged, turning routine travel into a hazardous ordeal. Highlighting the broader regional impact, former MLA Sher Singh Gadhia noted that the Phulwari-Khaidhar road is vital for regional development, as it would seamlessly connect isolated villages to main highways and simplify access to markets, medical facilities, and schools.
Unresolved Issues and Ongoing Agitation
Locals have repeatedly raised their grievances before various departmental officials and public representatives over the years, yet a permanent resolution has remained out of reach. The failure of authorities to take tangible action forced the community to adopt the path of agitation. The villagers have maintained a firm stance that their peaceful demonstration will persist until concrete steps are taken on the ground.
Administrative Action and Future Outlook
Addressing the ongoing situation, District Magistrate Apoorva Pandey explained that administrative paperwork regarding the road project is actively moving forward. A detailed project report has already been formulated and submitted to the central government for approval. Furthermore, PMGSY has been officially designated to oversee the execution of the road project, while discussions concerning forest clearance proposals are progressing continuously. The administration is closely monitoring every procedural step and following up regularly, while assuring the community that local authorities stand in solidarity with their struggles and are working diligently to secure essential facilities for them.
