At least 13 people have lost their lives in a major Ukrainian drone strike targeting the Russian republic of Tatarstan, according to local officials. Among the victims was one child, while 75 other individuals sustained injuries in what has become one of the deadliest single attacks on Russian soil since the outbreak of the full-scale war initiated by Moscow.
The strike hit the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometres, or approximately 680 miles, away from the Ukrainian border. Kyiv has not yet issued any official comments regarding the strike on this distant location. However, Ukraine's Armed Forces officially confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery situated in Nizhnekamsk was successfully struck during the operation.
Refineries and Industrial Targets Hit
In addition to the military confirmation, Ukrainian defence technology manufacturer FirePoint stated that its FP-1 drones were utilized in executing the attack. Local sources reported that the assault persisted for several hours, starting overnight and continuing well into the morning hours. Verified footage circulating on social media platforms displays massive plumes of thick black smoke and raging flames billowing into the sky during daylight, accompanied by the wailing sound of air raid sirens.
While comprehensive official details regarding the primary objective remain limited, Kyiv has notably escalated its long-range aerial campaigns against facilities that supply vital revenue and logistical backing to the Russian military effort. Moscow officially acknowledged that both industrial installations and residential zones were caught in the crosshairs. Russia's Investigative Committee stated that civilian individuals who were not involved in any military operations were present during the bombardment.
Regional Mourning and Wider Conflict
The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, formally confirmed the strike and extended his deepest condolences to the grieving families of the deceased victims. Echoing the sentiment, Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev described the tragedy as a tremendous pain for the entire community, prompting authorities to declare an official period of mourning across Tatarstan.
This incident follows previous actions by Ukraine's defence forces, which had previously struck oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk on June 12. Meanwhile, Moscow claimed that its air defence systems intercepted and shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight across various sectors. The conflict continues to see a heavy civilian toll on both sides, highlighted by a recent joint drone and missile strike on Kyiv that killed 21 people, alongside a separate Russian artillery attack in Kharkiv that claimed five lives overnight.
