Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has secured a massive funding round of approximately $15 billion (around 100 billion yuan), signaling intense investor appetite for domestic AI capabilities despite escalating regulatory pressure from Washington. This fresh capital injection comes merely two days after the United States government commanded federal civilian agencies to eliminate DeepSeek's software and technology from all official systems citing national security risks.
Major Chinese Industry Giants Back the Raise
The substantial investment round reportedly attracted prominent strategic backers from across China's technology and industrial sectors, including battery manufacturing titan CATL and social media powerhouse Tencent, the company behind the widely used WeChat application. The funding marks one of the largest single capital raises in China's venture capital history.
Rapid Escalation in Valuation and IPO Ambitions
This latest financial milestone follows a rapid series of capital gathering efforts by the Hangzhou-based company. Earlier in June, DeepSeek completed a transaction raising more than $7 billion, which valued the organization at $50 billion. By July, the startup entered negotiations to secure an extra $1.5 billion at an escalated valuation near $71 billion. Alongside these private funding efforts, the firm is preparing for a potential initial public offering in China that could take place as early as next year.
Infrastructure Expansion and Global AI Competition
DeepSeek plans to deploy this new capital toward accelerating its investments in heavy AI infrastructure and advancing open models targetting both Chinese and international user bases. The massive capital pool comes as investment surges across the broader domestic AI market in China. In May, Kimi developer Moonshot AI raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation, while Manus AI gathered over $500 million earlier this month. Additionally, Hong Kong-listed AI firms Zhipu AI (Z.ai) and MiniMax hold market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.
Founding History and Operational Control
Established in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek initially drew seed support from High-Flyer, a quantitative hedge fund co-founded by Liang. The startup achieved international prominence in early 2025 after releasing its free, open-weight R1 reasoning model, directly challenging top American AI enterprises. Based on corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen, Liang retains an estimated 81.6% majority ownership stake in DeepSeek's primary Chinese operating entity.
