Law enforcement authorities in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh have taken 26 individuals into custody, which includes five juveniles, following outbreaks of violence during demonstrations against the planned Siang dam project. The incidents occurred in Pasighat on October 23, prompting a strong response from local security forces as tensions continue to simmer in the region.
Detentions and Legal Actions
Authorities reported that six additional individuals have been detained for questioning regarding their potential involvement in the disturbances. According to a formal press release issued by East Siang Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba, a total of eight separate cases have been registered in connection with the various violent incidents. These charges have been filed under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Police confirmed that active investigations into all eight cases remain ongoing, while the specific identities, parental details, and residential addresses of the five apprehended juveniles have been withheld from public disclosure.
Activist Hunger Strike in Custody
Simultaneously, prominent anti-dam campaigner and advocate Ebo Mili alongside fellow activist Otul Jerang have reportedly commenced a hunger strike while currently held in Pasighat police custody. The protest comes amid escalating public resistance against the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. Both Mili and Jerang voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement authorities following the violence that erupted during anti-dam demonstrations on Saturday night as regional opposition to the mega infrastructure project intensified.
Appeals for Public Order
In response to the developments, the East Siang Police have issued a public appeal urging residents to maintain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information while the official inquiries proceed. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation of unrest across the local communities.
