Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (Retd) has made a strong appeal for a robust scientific strategy aimed at conserving the state’s exceptional plant biodiversity. He highlighted that greater research efforts, active community participation, and sustainable livelihood programs are essential to protect the region's natural heritage.
The governor shared these remarks during a discussion with Botanical Survey of India (BSI) Director Dr Kanad Das in Itanagar. The meeting focused extensively on methods to improve the conservation and systematic documentation of Arunachal Pradesh's vast botanical assets.
According to an official Lok Bhavan communique, Parnaik underscored the urgent requirement for long-term planning to safeguard the state’s fragile ecosystems. He pointed out that scientific documentation must be significantly strengthened, particularly across remote and previously unexplored geographical areas.
Rich Plant Diversity and Rare Species
Arunachal Pradesh boasts more than 5,000 flowering plant species, approximately 600 varieties of orchids, 75 distinct types of rhododendrons, and a diverse selection of valuable medicinal plants.
To secure these biological treasures, the governor put forward a proposal for a dedicated recovery framework targeting rare, endangered, and threatened plant species. This proposed framework encompasses GIS-based mapping, consistent population monitoring, seed banking operations, and the ecological restoration of degraded natural habitats.
Expanding Surveys and Digital Flora
Furthermore, Parnaik urged the BSI to scale up its botanical expeditions into difficult-to-access frontier locations and deploy additional scientific staff to ensure thorough documentation of the state's flora.
Describing Arunachal Pradesh as India’s Orchid Paradise, the governor noted that the state accounts for nearly 40 percent of the entire country's orchid species. He recommended establishing a dedicated botanical garden, setting up community-led orchid conservation zones, and expanding ex-situ conservation projects.
Additionally, the governor called for the development of a digital flora database alongside a climate-change monitoring network. These digital tools are intended to facilitate real-time ecological assessments and enhance public awareness regarding botanical preservation, a report stated. Dr Krishna Chowlu, Scientist-in-Charge at the BSI Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre, also participated in the meeting.
