Arunachal Pradesh Police have initiated a formal investigation into the alleged use of chemical agents to artificially ripen bananas within the Naharlagun area, according to official statements.
The inquiry was triggered after law enforcement authorities observed a video circulating widely across social media platforms. This footage ostensibly displayed an unidentified chemical substance being applied to batches of bananas to accelerate the ripening process, as explained by Naharlagun-Itanagar Capital Region Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega.
Registration of FIR and Legal Provisions
Following the emergence of this digital footage, K Dev, who serves as the officer-in-charge at the Naharlagun police station, formally registered an FIR on Wednesday. The legal action invokes relevant provisions outlined under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Superintendent of Police confirmed.
The circulating video was reportedly posted to Facebook by Ngurang Takar Dopum. It allegedly captures the application of chemical treatments on the fruit, which ultimately compelled local law enforcement to take official cognisance of the situation.
Scientific Examination and Scope of Probe
Officials noted that the exact chemical compound depicted in the video remains unidentified at this stage. Its precise composition and chemical makeup will be conclusively determined through rigorous scientific examination as a core component of the ongoing investigation.
Beyond identifying the substance, the inquiry will also work to pinpoint the individuals allegedly connected to the practice. Authorities intend to ascertain whether this method violates established food safety regulations or presents any tangible risks to consumer health and public safety.

Superintendent of Police Nyelam Nega emphasized that the department will handle any breaches of food safety norms with strict adherence to the law. He reiterated that law enforcement remains vigilant regarding matters affecting public welfare and will execute prompt interventions whenever warranted.
The investigation remains active, with the final determination of the substance's nature dependent upon forthcoming laboratory analysis.
