Archers from across Arunachal Pradesh have converged on the border district of Tawang as the 5th State Level Archery Championship 2026 officially got underway on Saturday at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium. The five-day tournament features approximately 100 competitors representing 13 teams drawn from multiple districts and Khelo India Centres. Beyond competing for state honours, top performers across various categories will earn the right to represent Arunachal Pradesh at upcoming national championships.
Inaugural Ceremony and Distinguished Guests
The sporting event was formally inaugurated by Nampong MLA Laisam Simai, who attended as the Chief Guest. Major General Amit Nautiyal, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 5 Mountain Division, was present as the Guest of Honour. Tawang in-charge Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta and several other civil and sports administration officials also joined the opening proceedings to welcome the participating athletes.
Significance of Tawang and the State's Archery Legacy
Addressing the assembled participants and spectators, Major General Nautiyal highlighted the strategic, cultural, and national importance of Tawang. He noted that the district stands not simply as a picturesque travel destination, but as an enduring symbol of frontier strength, deep cultural heritage, courage, and national pride for India. He commended the athletes of Arunachal Pradesh for building a respected footprint in archery, pointing out that competitors from the state have brought distinction to both their region and the country through their achievements at national and international stages.
Transition from Heritage Custom to Professional Discipline
Speaking at the gathering, Laisam Simai underlined the necessity of united efforts to establish Tawang as a premier global tourist destination. He also reflected on the traditional role archery has long held within indigenous tribal communities, observing how an activity originally rooted in hunting and community customs has evolved into a structured, professional sporting pursuit. Simai expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for its steady outreach and positive youth engagement initiatives in the frontier areas. He urged the archers to maintain focus, discipline, and commitment to their athletic goals throughout the competition.
Unveiling of the Tawang Music Festival Logo
The opening ceremony additionally served as the platform to introduce the official logo for the upcoming Tawang Music Festival, an event scheduled to open on 29 October 2026. Simai unveiled the festival insignia alongside fellow dignitaries as part of broader initiatives aimed at spotlighting the cultural traditions and tourism appeal of the district. The archery championship continues over the coming days across multiple skill divisions, providing both young prospects and seasoned shooters an arena to demonstrate their talent.
