Tensions have escalated sharply in Rawalakot, located in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, following allegations of security forces using lethal force against demonstrators during the election period. Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International USA has strongly condemned the actions of Pakistani authorities, describing the violence as unlawful and calling for an immediate, transparent investigation. The organization emphasized that the disturbing reports coming out of Rawalakot align with a long-standing history of unlawful violence directed against peaceful protesters in the region.
Demands for Transparent Investigation and Restoration of Services
In its official statement, Amnesty International expressed deep concern over the excessive use of force by security personnel during the elections. The rights body urged authorities to initiate a prompt, independent, and transparent inquiry into the alleged use of deadly force against civilians. Furthermore, the organization highlighted that the shutdown of internet and mobile connectivity severely hampers the ability of independent bodies to verify the actual ground situation.
To ensure accountability and truthfulness, Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to immediately restore all communication networks across the affected areas. The group also urged the government to allow journalists, media organizations, and independent international observers unfettered access to Rawalakot. Without open communication and media presence, verifying human rights violations remains nearly impossible.
Crackdown on JAAC and Misuse of Counter-Terrorism Laws
The ongoing electoral turmoil in the region was further exacerbated by the official ban imposed on the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Amnesty International has repeatedly pressed Pakistani authorities to lift this prohibition and stop utilizing counter-terrorism legislation to target, detain, and silence members and supporters of the JAAC under arbitrary grounds.
The rights organization firmly stated that imposing bans on civilian activist groups can never serve as a valid justification for employing lethal violence against demonstrators. Amnesty International urged authorities to respect citizens' rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, reiterating that legitimate political grievances cannot be met with state-sponsored suppression.
