Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party will stage peaceful mass demonstrations across every district headquarters in the state until October 31. The political offensive targets Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his party, whom the Chief Minister accused of carrying out systematic attacks against the foundational pillars of Indian democracy.
Allegations of Selective Acceptance of Election Mandates
Detailing the party's stance on social platform X, Sarma alleged that the principal opposition party routinely disputes election outcomes whenever the ballot box does not deliver an outcome favorable to its interests. He characterized this pattern as an attempt to challenge the democratic will of voters for partisan gains.
Pointing out what he described as glaring contradictions in the opposition narrative, Sarma noted that while Rahul Gandhi labeled Narendra Modi's election as Prime Minister a product of manipulation, the Congress leader never cast doubt over his own parliamentary victory or his subsequent elevation to the post of Leader of the Opposition. The Chief Minister maintained that such selective acceptance directly challenges standard democratic conventions.
Contrasting Responses in Assam and Kerala
The Chief Minister further contrasted the opposition party's divergent reactions to electoral verdicts across different Indian states. He pointed out that when citizens vote in Assam, the results are routinely rejected or criticized by the opposition leadership, whereas election results in Kerala are readily embraced without contestation.
According to Sarma, this behavior reflects an attitude where democratic processes are deemed legitimate by Congress leadership only when they culminate in an electoral triumph for their party. He asserted that democracy cannot function under a standard where legitimacy is tied exclusively to political victory.
Concerns Over Judicial Independence
Addressing recent legal and political maneuvers, Sarma criticized Rahul Gandhi for marching to the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister characterized the move as an overt bid to impose political pressure on the nation's highest judicial body, citing the Chief Justice of India's reported decision to decline a personal meeting with the Congress leader.
Sarma underscored that constitutional organs cannot be subordinated to political dissatisfaction stemming from defeats at the hustings. He maintained that maintaining an independent judiciary is critical for the nation and must remain insulated from electoral frustrations.
Key Objectives of the District Demonstrations
The statewide mobilization will focus on informing the public about specific actions undertaken by the opposition party, with BJP cadres organizing outreach across all districts.
- Protecting Constitutional Bodies: The demonstrations aim to rally citizens against political tactics designed to pressure and undermine independent constitutional authorities.
- Voter Roll Verification: Protesters will highlight opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that resistance to roll revision serves to protect unlawful infiltrators.
- Defending the Popular Mandate: The rallies will emphasize the necessity of upholding authentic voter choices rather than disputing outcomes based on political convenience.
Reaffirming Backing for the 2047 National Vision
Confirming the timeline for the protests, Sarma affirmed that the people of Assam would make their voices heard through peaceful gatherings organized at every district center from Tuesday through October 31.
Beyond critiquing the opposition, the statewide campaign will serve as a reaffirmation of the Assam unit's backing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Party workers will reiterate their commitment toward realizing the administration's blueprint of transforming India into a fully developed nation, or Viksit Bharat, by the centenary year of 2047. Sarma concluded that both the mandate of the electorate and institutional autonomy must remain sacrosanct.
