Residents in and around Guwahati are facing severe weather conditions as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), operating under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), issued an official weather warning on Sunday. The advisory alerts the population to impending thunderstorms, lightning, and intense rainfall across the region over a 24-hour window running from 8:30 am on August 16 to 8:30 am on August 17.
Expected Rainfall Levels and Atmospheric Conditions
Meteorological predictions indicate that Guwahati and its neighbouring localities will experience light to moderate precipitation accompanied by frequent lightning and thunder throughout this period. While widespread areas are set to receive up to 6 cm of rainfall within 24 hours, isolated pockets could encounter heavy downpours ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm. Strong gusty winds associated with these convective storms also present an additional hazard across vulnerable terrain.
Potential Infrastructure and Transport Disruptions
The heavy precipitation carries significant risks of severe waterlogging, particularly in low-lying residential sectors and road underpasses. Such localized flooding is likely to create traffic bottlenecks, slowing down commutes across the city. Furthermore, intense rain spells may temporarily restrict visibility for drivers, while power supply networks and basic civic utilities could experience short-term outages. Authorities have also noted that boat and ferry operations along local waterways might face suspension or severe disruption if water conditions deteriorate further.
