Consumer demand across the Indian passenger sedan market showed clear division between value-driven compact models and executive offerings during the month of August. Monthly automotive despatches reveal that high fuel efficiency, attractive starting price points, and updated safety credentials continue to steer mainstream family car buyers directly toward entry-level sedans. Leading the tally with a massive majority of overall volume is Maruti Dzire, supported by strong performances from Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze.
Maruti Dzire Dominates Volume Charts and Market Share
Maruti Dzire sustained its undisputed leadership at the top of the sedan segment by clocking 18,418 units in August. When compared with the 16,509 units delivered in the corresponding month of the preceding year, the car posted a net increase of 1,909 units. This translated into an annual sales expansion of 11.56%. With this momentum, Dzire commanded an overwhelming 55.96% share of the entire domestic sedan category, meaning more than one out of every two sedans sold in the country belonged to this single nameplate.
Maruti Dzire retails at an ex-showroom starting price of ₹6.31 lakh and reaches ₹9.41 lakh for the top-end trim. The updated model features sharper exterior styling with LED headlights and a revised grille. Inside the dual-tone cabin, it offers spacious seating, rear air conditioning vents, and touchscreen options ranging between 7 and 9 inches. Notable equipment includes a sunroof, 360-degree camera, wireless connectivity, and cruise control. On the protection front, it carries a 5-star crash test rating with six airbags, electronic stability program, and hill hold assist fitted as standard equipment. Powering the sedan is a 1.2-litre Z-series engine delivering 80 bhp, returning a fuel economy of 24.79 to 25.71 km/l on petrol and 33.73 km/kg on CNG.
Hyundai Aura Consolidates While Honda Amaze Doubles Volume
Securing the runner-up spot in the market hierarchy, Hyundai Aura achieved 6,685 unit sales during the month. This marks a positive addition of 1,349 units over the 5,336 units recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year. Delivering a robust 25.28% year-on-year growth, Aura captured a 20.31% share of the sedan market, confirming its status as a reliable and widely trusted family choice.
Meanwhile, Honda Amaze delivered the most striking breakout performance of the period. Total dispatches of the Amaze reached 3,512 units in August against just 1,753 units sold in the identical month a year ago. By adding 1,759 units, Honda effectively doubled sales volume with a stellar 100.34% annual growth. This surge elevated Amaze's total footprint to 10.67% of the entire sedan segment.
Mixed Fortunes for Mid-Size Entrants: Virtus and Slavia Slide
In the mid-size executive sedan space, Volkswagen Virtus finished fourth overall with 1,301 units sold. However, the model witnessed negative momentum compared to the 1,674 units registered in the same month of the previous year. The decline of 373 units reflected a 22.28% annual drop, though Virtus maintained a 3.95% market share in the segment.
Skoda Slavia similarly experienced softer demand during the month, delivering 897 units compared to 1,008 units in the prior-year period. This reduction of 111 units amounted to an 11.01% year-on-year fall. Slavia currently occupies fifth position on the overall sedan sales ladder with a market share of 2.73%.
Performance Breakdown: Tigor, Verna, City, and Camry
Tata Tigor retained steady demand across its petrol, CNG, and battery-electric options, registering 862 units compared to 805 units sold in the previous year. A gain of 57 units gave Tigor a positive 7.08% annual growth and a 2.62% market share, with its electric variant providing crucial volume stability.
Hyundai Verna endured a challenging month, managing sales of only 529 units as against 771 units during the previous year. Shedding 242 units, Verna suffered a steep 31.39% contraction, marking the sharpest contraction on the list and shrinking its share to 1.61%. Conversely, Honda City demonstrated resilience by logging 514 units, up by 77 units from 437 units previously, posting a 17.62% yearly gain and a 1.56% market share. In the premium luxury hybrid bracket, Toyota Camry registered 195 units, rising 23.42% from 158 units last year to secure a 0.59% market share.
