Moving beyond the newly mandated velocity thresholds within Delhi territory will trigger automated traffic challans.
Revised Speed Caps and Automated Traffic Radar Tracking
Under the revised speed regulations, private cars traveling within the Delhi jurisdictional stretch are restricted to a top speed of 70 km/h. Drivers breaching this 70 km/h cap will face immediate financial penalties. Simultaneously, the speed limit for heavy motor vehicles, including commercial buses and trucks, has been lowered to 60 km/h. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already recalibrated the speed detection radar systems positioned along the corridor. As a result, automated cameras are actively logging speed infractions and issuing electronic fines to non-compliant vehicles.
Overview of the Delhi Stretch and Existing Restrictions
Spanning a total length of 213 km, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway originates near the Akshardham temple complex in Delhi. A 14.75 km portion of this expressway lies within Delhi before reaching the Loni border. This initial segment features a 6.5 km elevated corridor extending from Gandhi Nagar to the Loni border. To ensure safety and minimize urban congestion, traffic authorities banned two-wheelers and e-rickshaws from accessing this 6.5 km elevated section right from the day of its inauguration.
From 100 km/h to 70 km/h: Background of the Revision
Prior to this update, light motor vehicles were permitted to operate at speeds up to 100 km/h on the Delhi stretch, while heavy transport vehicles moved at 80 km/h. NHAI had earlier sought formal recommendations from the Delhi Traffic Police to establish localized speed limits tailored to urban traffic patterns. Because initial advice was pending, standard express highway speed ceilings remained active temporarily.
Following a thorough assessment of road design parameters, traffic density, and merging points along the 14.75 km stretch, the Delhi Traffic Police submitted its recommendations to NHAI. The highway authority accepted the guidelines and enforced them with immediate effect. Daily commuters traveling between Delhi and NCR locations are urged to adhere strictly to the updated 70 km/h and 60 km/h caps to prevent heavy fines.
