Vietnamese vehicle manufacturer VinFast is actively preparing to expand its footprint in India's rapidly growing electric vehicle sector. The company has officially commenced road testing for the second-generation model of its upcoming VF 5 sub-4 meter electric SUV in India. Test mules of the vehicle were recently spotted on the roads of Bengaluru. Having previously introduced models like the VF6, VF7, and VF MPV 7 for the Indian market, VinFast is now concentrating its strategic efforts on the sub-4 meter category, which remains one of the most popular automotive segments in the country.
Sub-4 Meter Market Strategy and Pricing Expectations
The compact EV space in India is currently dominated by established competitors such as the Tata Punch EV and Tata Nexon EV. To support its global vision of reaching an annual production capacity of 10 lakh units by 2030, entering high-volume sales segments in key markets like India is crucial for VinFast. Achieving a high degree of local manufacturing and component sourcing in India will allow the automaker to position the VF 5 at an aggressive price point. Industry estimates suggest that the starting price of the electric SUV could begin around Rs 10 lakh. While an official market launch timeline has not been announced yet, ongoing road tests indicate that the commercial launch could happen in the near future.
Redesigned SUV Aesthetics and Dimensional Specifications
In terms of styling, the second-generation VF 5 moves away from its predecessor's hatchback-like posture, adopting a more rugged and conventional SUV stance. Up front, the vehicle features an upright fascia, a flat bonnet, a closed-off grille, lower-mounted headlights, and full-width LED DRLs. The lower bumper design incorporates horizontal slats for added visual width. Along the sides, it displays sharp body paneling, prominent circular wheel arches, protective black body cladding, and traditional door handles. The rear end comes fitted with a roof-mounted spoiler, a sturdy bumper, and connected tail lamps. The global iteration of this model measures 3967 mm in length, 1723 mm in width, 1579 mm in height, and rides on a 2514 mm wheelbase.
Interior Cabin Layout and Modern Equipment
Inside the cabin, the updated VF 5 is expected to feature a modernized layout centered around a large freestanding touchscreen infotainment display, a redesigned dashboard structure, a 2-spoke sporty steering wheel, and a refreshed center console. Convenience amenities are likely to include a sunroof, ventilated front seats, a digital TFT instrument cluster, and dedicated rear AC vents. Safety will be a major highlight, with the vehicle coming equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) along with multiple standard safety features.
Powertrain Performance, Range, and Fast Charging
Under the hood, the electric SUV will offer two battery pack configurations, measuring 29.6 kWh and 37.23 kWh. Power is supplied by a front-mounted single electric motor that generates an output of 134 HP and 135 Nm of peak torque. When equipped with the larger 37.23 kWh battery option, the vehicle delivers an estimated NEDC driving range of approximately 326.4 km on a single charge. Additionally, the EV supports rapid DC charging capability, enabling the battery pack to replenish from 10 percent to 70 percent capacity in just 33 minutes.
