The government of Gujarat has achieved a major milestone in public service delivery by digitizing travel credentials for persons with disabilities across the state. In a joint effort, the Social Justice and Empowerment Department alongside the State e-Governance Mission Team integrated disability bus passes directly into the DigiLocker platform. Following this digital transition, more than 4.42 lakh passes have been generated nationwide across Gujarat, empowering beneficiaries with seamless access to free transportation services operating under the state fleet.
Paperless Convenience on Public Transit
Under this updated digital mechanism, commuters registered under the scheme no longer need to carry physical laminated identity cards or paper passes during their journeys. Passengers traveling aboard Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation or GSRTC buses can simply display their government-approved digital bus pass on their mobile devices for instant verification by conductors. This digital access eliminates the persistent worry of losing, misplacing, or physically damaging crucial paperwork while traveling from one destination to another.
Enhanced Governance and Quick Verification
Highlighting the advantages of the initiative, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. Pradyuman Vaja and Department Secretary Harshad Patel explained that the platform ensures highly secure credentials available on demand. The integration aligns closely with the core vision of the Digital India campaign by reducing administrative reliance on paper while upgrading public infrastructure. Because DigiLocker stores verified electronic documents issued directly by government authorities, service validation becomes quick, tamper-proof, and accessible 24/7 anywhere in the state.
Financial Security with Accidental Death Cover
Beyond facilitating daily commutes, the disability bus pass incorporates a significant financial safety net for cardholders. Each valid pass comes with an embedded accidental death insurance policy valued at Rs 4 lakh. In the unfortunate event of a fatal accident involving the pass holder, the designated nominee or legally recognized heir can claim the insurance amount by submitting the requisite verifying documents to the concerned department, offering vital financial protection to vulnerable families.
Strengthening Digital Welfare Services
The successful rollout of DigiLocker-linked transport passes reflects a broader effort by state administrators to simplify welfare scheme accessibility through modern technological infrastructure. By eliminating manual paperwork check-ins and repetitive physically verified renewals, the system provides dignity, convenience, and independence to hundreds of thousands of individuals with disabilities across urban and rural parts of Gujarat alike.
