Under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Madhubani district of Bihar is providing free vocational skill training to empower uneducated individuals, rural youth, and college dropouts. The primary goal of this government initiative is to furnish practical skills to individuals who lacked access to formal education, enabling them to earn a sustainable livelihood through employment or self-employment. Each year, the institute sets a target of training 1,800 individuals in the district to foster local economic independence.
Focus on Women Empowerment and Tailored Skill Courses
A major highlight of the program is its strong focus on female empowerment, with 95 percent of all courses reserved specifically for women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds. Nevertheless, dedicated technical and skill-based programs are also available for male candidates. The duration of these training modules ranges from 30 days to 130 days, depending on the trade, offering hands-on experience along with fundamental theoretical knowledge.
Vocational Trades Aligned with Local Industry and Art
The curriculum at Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Madhubani is carefully curated to reflect local art forms and regional economic needs. For female trainees, the offerings include an 80-day sewing and tailoring course, a 130-day computer skills program, hand embroidery, beauty parlor management, and traditional Madhubani painting. In the food processing domain, instruction focuses on value addition for local agricultural produce, including pickle, papad, and chips manufacturing. Under the One District One Product framework, specialized training is provided for Makhana cultivation and processing. For male trainees, specialized instruction is offered in fields such as electrical work and computer applications.
Eligibility Criteria and Registration via the SIDH Portal
Candidates aged between 15 and 45 years are eligible to enroll in these free training programs, with priority given to Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders. The application process is streamlined for digital access. Prospective trainees can self-register online on the Ministry's Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) portal using their Aadhaar card and active mobile number. Applicants in rural areas who face digital barriers can also seek assistance from village-level resource persons or local teachers to complete their registration.
Recognized Certification and Post-Training Career Growth
Upon successfully completing training programs lasting three months, six months, or one year, candidates receive an official certificate recognized by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). According to Director Anil Prasad, this government-backed certification enables beneficiaries to seek employment opportunities across India. Furthermore, certified individuals aiming to start their own small businesses can utilize the qualification to secure government loans under various entrepreneurship schemes, work as local resource persons, or build successful careers in other states.
