Across West Bengal, lakhs of women who signed up for the Annapurna Bhandar Yojana are now keeping a close eye on their bank accounts, waiting for the August payment of Rs. 3,000 to land. The scheme has just crossed the two month mark since it began, and if your registration went through cleanly, the next instalment should not be far away.
Rolled out on June 3 by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the programme has quickly become one of the state's most talked about welfare initiatives. It picks up where the earlier Lakshmir Bhandar scheme left off, and for a lot of families the amount arriving each month is now noticeably larger than what they were used to.
A bigger monthly cheque than before
The Annapurna Bhandar Yojana has replaced the TMC-backed Lakshmir Bhandar scheme. Under the old Lakshmi Bhandar arrangement, eligible women received somewhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 a month. The new scheme lifts that support to a flat Rs. 3,000 every month for each successfully verified beneficiary, a jump that makes a genuine difference to a household budget stretched thin by rising costs.
When will the August installment be credited
If you are already enrolled and your details have been verified, the August payment is expected to follow the scheme's usual rhythm, arriving in the first week of the month. Beneficiaries who have cleared verification will see Rs. 3,000 credited straight to their bank accounts, with no extra step required at their end.
The track record so far backs this up. The first instalment went out on June 3, when Rs. 3,000 reached 2,825,769 women in a single round. The second instalment followed on July 1, handed out at an event held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, and by that point the scheme's reach had swelled to 1 crore beneficiaries.
How to check whether the money has arrived
For anyone unsure whether the payment has actually hit their account, the status can be checked online in a few minutes. Log in to West Bengal's Social Security Portal and open the Track Applicant Status option. To go ahead you will need three details ready, your registered mobile number, your application ID, and your Aadhaar number.
What each application status means
If you have filled the form but nothing has come through yet, the first thing to do is read your application status carefully, because each label is telling you something specific about where your case stands. Under Inquiry means verification is still pending and no payment has been released so far. Under Processing means your application is currently being worked on. Payment Processing is the label you want to see, because it signals that the application is approved and the money should be credited shortly. Rejected means the payment stays on hold until the underlying problem is fixed and the form is resubmitted.
Common reasons the payment does not come through
Even approved applicants sometimes open their passbooks to find nothing there, and the reasons usually trace back to a handful of avoidable slip-ups
- Using a joint bank account rather than a single-holder personal account
- Uploading a blurry or cropped document during the scanning step
- A spelling mismatch between the Aadhaar card and the application form
- Applying through an unofficial website instead of the government portal
- Ignoring an invalid bank account status instead of fixing Aadhaar seeding
- A bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded or not DBT-enabled
- A name that got struck off during the verification or re-checking drive
The takeaway for registered women is simple. If the August money is running late, check the status first, then trace the holdup to one of these issues and get it corrected rather than waiting on indefinitely for a payment that may be stuck.
