A brutal murder of a grocery store owner, Banti Kumar, in Patna has ignited a major debate regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar. The 25-year-old victim was abducted on July 6 near the Patna Junction area, allegedly after he stood up against a sex racket operating in his neighborhood of Karbigahiya. The case has now escalated into a significant political confrontation, with the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, leveling serious allegations against the ruling establishment and demanding accountability.
Severe Accusations Against Police Conduct
Tejashwi Yadav took to social media to claim that a sex racket was thriving in Karbigahiya under the explicit patronage of police and those in power. He asserted that although the CCTV footage of the abduction clearly captured the incident, the police failed to act promptly. Instead of conducting a rescue mission, the authorities reportedly reprimanded the grieving family members who had approached them for help. Tejashwi alleged that the local police were effectively shielding the perpetrators, which ultimately resulted in the tragic loss of life.
Tejashwi Yadav's Interaction with the Victim's Family
Demonstrating his direct involvement, Tejashwi Yadav shared a video of his telephone conversation with Banti's wife. In the emotional footage, the victim's widow can be seen weeping while the opposition leader offers his support and promises that his party will fight for justice at every level. He emphasized that the police only recovered the mutilated remains of the victim from the Athmalgola police station area in rural Patna after intense pressure was exerted by a delegation from the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
The Investigation Timeline
According to police reports, Banti Kumar was kidnapped on July 6 from the Dudh Mandi area near Patna Junction. Subsequent investigations revealed that the abductors transported him via the bypass road toward Mokama. The murder was confirmed only after the police recovered his body, which had been buried near Phulailpur village in the Athmalgola police station jurisdiction. While officers from Jakkanpur, Kotwali, and Athmalgola stations were tasked with the search, the opposition leader maintains that their efforts were delayed and lackadaisical, failing to prevent the outcome.
Rising Political Pressure Amidst By-Elections
This incident comes at a critical juncture for the state as the Bankipur by-election process is underway, placing significant political pressure on the government. Tejashwi Yadav has directly challenged Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to explain the administration's failure to maintain safety and address the culture of impunity. While there has been no official response from the government regarding these specific allegations, the police have stated that they are actively investigating the conspiracy behind the murder and are working to identify the roles of all involved suspects.
