These specific findings have provided a factual basis for the allegations raised by the family regarding the nature of the encounter.
Political impact and government response
The alleged fake encounter has been the subject of heated political debates in the state for several days. With the opposition continuously attacking the government and demanding a transparent probe, the authorities have felt the pressure to act. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has taken a firm stance, declaring that the incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness and that no guilty party will be spared. To ensure justice is served, the Bihar government has immediately set up a high-level judicial commission to oversee the investigation.
Assurances of strict action
Addressing an event in Patna, Samrat Chaudhary reiterated the government's commitment to accountability. He emphasized that if anyone is found guilty in the Bhojpur case, strict legal action will follow. He noted that the administration is working proactively to address public grievances. Furthermore, he issued a directive stating that if any official application remains pending without a decision for 30 days, an automatic suspension order for the concerned officer will be issued from the Chief Minister's office on the 31st day. The administration aims to prioritize administrative relief and timely justice for the public.
Background of the encounter
Bharat Tiwari, a native of Bilauti village in Bhojpur, was known for using social media to highlight local issues such as corruption and river erosion. His death occurred on June 17, 2026, during a police encounter. While police maintain that Tiwari was armed and was killed during an exchange of fire, his family and local villagers allege that he had surrendered before being shot, a claim they assert is supported by a Facebook live video. Following the family's formal complaint, a murder case was registered at the Shahpur police station against several officers, including the local SDPO. Consequently, the SDPO was removed from his post, and a judicial probe led by a retired judge was initiated. The situation also drew widespread attention following a large public gathering (Mahapanchayat), after which Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary personally assured the public that a thorough investigation would take place.
