Cloudburst Buries Vehicles at Kishtwar Hydro Project Site, Mumbai-Pune Expressway Turns into a Lake as Monsoon Fury Shuts Schools Nationwide

Heavy monsoon rain has thrown normal life out of gear across large parts of the country. A cloudburst at an under-construction hydroelectric project site in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, left several vehicles buried under debris, while the Mumbai-Pune Expressway turned into what looked like a lake after being submerged in rainwater. With the downpour continuing unabated, the weather department has issued red and orange alerts for Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, forcing authorities to shut schools and colleges, cancel flights and divert train routes.

Cloudburst Wreaks Havoc at Kishtwar Hydro Project Site

The site of the under-construction Kwar Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a major accident late on Sunday night after a cloudburst was followed by heavy rain. A sudden and powerful surge of debris swept through the entire project site, burying several vehicles under mud, rocks and rubble. In hilly terrain, a cloudburst can send huge volumes of water and debris rushing downhill within minutes, which is why the vehicles parked at the site had almost no time to be moved to safety. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and are keeping a close watch on the situation.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh Says No Loss of Life or Property

Reacting to news of the cloudburst in Kishtwar, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh said, "I have just received news from Kishtwar that flash flood water has entered the premises of the 540 MW under-construction Kwar Hydroelectric Project. I spoke to Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar about this. The good news is that there has been no loss of life or property. Some machinery linked to the project has also been shifted out without any damage. Overall, every part of the under-construction project is safe and has not been damaged. There is nothing to worry about." His statement makes clear that despite the accident, a bigger disaster was averted and crucial machinery was moved to safety in time.

Landslide in Doda Shuts the Jammu-Kishtwar Highway Completely

Continuous rain also triggered a landslide in the Prem Nagar area of Doda district. A huge volume of debris slid down the hillside onto the Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway, forcing the road to shut completely and bringing traffic heading towards Kishtwar to a complete halt. This highway is a critical link connecting Kishtwar district to the rest of the Jammu division, so its closure has disrupted the movement of both people and essential goods in the region.

Relief and Rescue Operations Under Way on a War Footing

The administration has deployed relief and rescue teams in the affected areas. Work to clear the debris from the road and restore traffic on the Jammu-Kishtwar route at the earliest is being carried out on a war footing. Given the weather department's warning, officials are continuously monitoring the situation and have appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel, so that no one's life is put at risk in case of another landslide or a sudden flash flood.

Where Red Alerts and Orange Alerts Have Been Issued

The weather department has issued a warning for the next two to three hours predicting thundery rain, strong winds and lightning across several parts of the country. A red alert has been declared for Mumbai city, Mumbai suburban, Palghar, Raigad and Thane in Maharashtra, where winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour combined with heavy rain and lightning are considered highly likely. A red alert for similarly severe weather conditions has also been issued for Balod, Bemetara, Dhamtari, Durg, Gariaband and Raipur in Chhattisgarh. In addition, an orange alert has been issued for Odisha, other parts of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and several districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where winds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour, moderate rain and thundery lightning are expected. The weather department has said the weather in these areas could deteriorate suddenly, which is likely to disrupt normal life. A red alert essentially means the administration must act immediately, while an orange alert means people need to stay alert and be prepared.

People have been advised not to take shelter in open areas or under trees, to stay away from weak structures and to avoid unnecessary travel. They have also been urged to keep track of updates from the administration and traffic authorities, since standing under trees or near weak buildings during strong winds and lightning can prove fatal.

Rain Slows Mumbai to a Crawl, Schools and Colleges Shut

Relentless, heavy rain in Mumbai has badly disrupted daily life. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert while warning of heavy rainfall. As a precaution, the BMC has declared a holiday on Monday for all government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai. The decision was taken keeping student safety as the top priority. Besides Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar have also been directed to keep schools shut. However, government and private offices will remain open as usual and continue functioning as per their regular schedule, meaning the disruption has been limited mainly to protecting schoolchildren rather than affecting the daily routines of office-goers.

The impact of the rain is also clearly visible on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Continuous, heavy rain has left the entire expressway looking like a pond, causing several vehicles travelling on it to break down. This expressway is the busiest route between Mumbai and Pune, carrying thousands of vehicles every day, so the waterlogging has left commuters stuck in hours-long jams.

Runway Shut for an Hour at the Airport, Local Trains Hit Too

The impact of the rain on transport is clearly visible elsewhere as well. Runway operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport had to be halted for nearly an hour because of heavy rain, winds gusting up to 42 knots and poor visibility. As a result, four flights had to be cancelled while 13 aircraft were diverted to nearby airports. Meanwhile, waterlogging at more than 10 major locations, including Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, or LTT, in Kurla, also disrupted Mumbai's local train services, with several trains running late. Since lakhs of people in Mumbai depend on local trains for their daily commute, the delays have directly affected the routines of office-goers and students alike.

All Educational Institutions in Sambalpur Shut on July 6 Too

In Sambalpur, Odisha, heavy rain and persistently bad weather have led to the closure of all schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions in the district on July 6. To ensure the safety of students and staff, the Collector and DM of Sambalpur have ordered these closures as a precaution across the SMC area, Dhankauda block and the entire district. This makes clear that it is not just Maharashtra, but parts of eastern India too, where the administration is taking precautionary steps in response to worsening weather.

Landslides on the Mumbai-Pune Rail Route, Several Trains Cancelled

The effect of Maharashtra's relentless, heavy rain is now clearly visible on rail services as well. Early on Monday morning, landslides at multiple points on the busiest Mumbai-Pune rail route badly disrupted train operations. Landslides near Thakurwadi railway station close to Karjat and in the Khandala-Monkey Hill section left all three railway lines in this ghat section covered with debris, forcing several trains to be cancelled while many others were rerouted.

According to Central Railway, the first landslide occurred near Thakurwadi railway station close to Karjat. A short while later, at around 3:05 am, a large quantity of debris and rocks fell from the hillside onto the railway track on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill. Both incidents affected all three railway lines of the Mumbai-Pune ghat section. Because of its hilly and winding terrain, this ghat section has long been considered vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon. Railway officials immediately halted train movement on the route for safety reasons and launched an operation to clear the debris. Engineering and track maintenance teams have reached the spot and are working to restore the track as quickly as possible.

ISRO Satellite Images Show a Dense Band of Clouds

Satellite images from ISRO show that a large band of clouds has formed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, causing intense rainfall in Gujarat and Maharashtra as well as in West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar-Jharkhand. In these images, the tops of the clouds in both weather systems appear extremely cold and bright white, indicating intense storm activity. According to meteorologists, such cloud formations suggest that these regions could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall in the period ahead, which is why the administration needs to remain in alert mode.

What this means for you

The disruption from this spell of monsoon rain reaches well beyond a single city, affecting daily life across several states.

  • Across India: Red and orange alerts in Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh could affect travel, flights and train schedules, so check for updates before heading out.
  • In Mumbai: All government and private schools and colleges are shut on Monday, the expressway and local trains are disrupted, and flights have been cancelled or diverted at the airport, so travellers should plan extra time.
  • In Kishtwar (Jammu and Kashmir): With the Jammu-Kishtwar highway closed, anyone travelling on this route will need an alternative plan and should avoid unnecessary travel.
  • In Sambalpur (Odisha): All educational institutions will remain closed on July 6, so students and parents should take note.
