A shocking incident occurred in the Hajipur district of Bihar, where a law enforcement official allegedly acted against the very laws he was sworn to protect. On the Hajipur-Muzaffarpur National Highway-22, within the limits of the Bhagwanpur police station in Bafapur Bampur village, a police officer intoxicated by alcohol opened fire on an army soldier. While the bullet did not strike the soldier directly, the gunpowder discharge caused a significant injury to his eye. The accused, identified as Deepak Kumar, is currently posted at the Forbesganj police station in the Araria district.
The Sequence of Events
The incident unfolded around 4:30 AM. An individual knocked on the door of Ganga Singh, whose house is located alongside the highway. The man was seeking help as his vehicle had skidded into a roadside ditch. Displaying signs of clear intoxication, the driver requested assistance. Ganga Singh and his son Rajneesh, a soldier in the Indian Army, helped push the vehicle out of the ditch. Once the car was back on the road, they requested the man to leave. However, the intoxicated man refused to depart and continued to verbally abuse the family for nearly an hour.
Shooting and Detention
The situation escalated dangerously when the suspect grabbed Rajneesh by the neck with his left hand and drew his service pistol, firing directly at the soldier with the intent to kill. Fortunately, the bullet missed Rajneesh’s left eye by a narrow margin, though the impact of the gunpowder left him wounded. Locals managed to overpower the officer, disarm him, and alerted the police. When the Bhagwanpur police arrived at the scene, they recovered a spent casing and a bottle of liquor from the officer’s vehicle.
Police Investigation
An FSL team was deployed to gather evidence from the scene of the crime. The accused, Deepak Kumar, is a native of Jehanabad. Local authorities have placed him in custody, and the legal process for filing an FIR is currently underway. The fact that an officer in uniform was consuming alcohol and subsequently opened fire on a soldier has led to widespread public outcry, raising serious questions about police conduct in the state. Investigations are ongoing, though no official statement has yet been released by senior department officials.
