Two young women lost their lives on Saturday after a speeding SUV rammed into their scooter near a petrol pump at Adigopalpur, under the Bochahan police station area of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar. The Fortuner, which carried a VIP registration number, hit the scooter from behind with such force that both riders were thrown onto the road. The two women worked with a women's group linked to a private finance company, handling banking related tasks. Onlookers were left stunned to see a political party's flag mounted on the SUV involved in the crash.
Who were the victims
The deceased were identified as 20 year old Neha Kumari and 22 year old Nishu Kumari, both residents of Sharfuddinpur (Gopalpur). Neha died on the spot, while Nishu, who was critically injured, succumbed during treatment at a hospital a short while later. The two friends were riding together from Sharfuddinpur towards Muzaffarpur city on Saturday when the accident occurred.
SUV coming from Darbhanga smashed into the scooter
According to eyewitnesses, the Fortuner was travelling at high speed from the Darbhanga side towards Muzaffarpur. Near the petrol pump at Adigopalpur, it struck the scooter from behind with such impact that the scooter was smashed to pieces and both women were flung onto the road. The sound of the collision drew people from nearby, and a crowd gathered at the spot within moments. Locals wasted no time pulling the injured women out and rushing them towards medical help. Neha could not be saved, while Nishu was taken to a nearby private hospital, where she later died during treatment.
Driver and occupants flee before police arrival
The driver of the Fortuner suffered a head injury in the crash, but he fled the scene along with the other occupants of the vehicle before police could arrive. Locals said the VIP numbered Fortuner is registered in Purnia district, and it had a political party's flag fixed on it. On being alerted, police from the Bochahan station reached the spot and seized both the damaged Fortuner and the scooter. The bodies of both women have been sent for postmortem.
Police working to trace the vehicle's owner
Police are now trying to identify the actual owner of the VIP numbered Fortuner. Raids are underway at multiple locations to track down the driver and other occupants who fled the scene. Investigators say the case is being probed further and arrests are expected soon.
