Two very different films are ruling India's box office charts this weekend. The action thriller Mirzapur: The Movie rocketed past fifty crore rupees within two days of release, while the Neem Karoli Baba biographical drama Hanuman Ansh is now knocking on the door of the coveted hundred crore club in India. The two films could not be more different in scale or genre, yet together they show just how much appetite audiences currently have for the big screen, from a slick franchise-driven action release to a modestly budgeted devotional drama.
A Blockbuster Opening Day
Mirzapur: The Movie hit theatres on Friday and immediately signalled its dominance by collecting 24.75 crore rupees on day one alone. That opening day number was enough to outpace two other recent big releases, Saiyaara, which had opened to 22 crore rupees, and Awarapan 2, which managed 21.50 crore rupees on its first day. The momentum carried straight into the weekend, with theatres continuing to report strong footfall for the film on its second day as well.
Saturday Adds Another ₹31 Crore
According to data tracked by Sacnilk, the film added 31 crore rupees on its second day. The Hindi version did almost all of the heavy lifting, bringing in 30.75 crore rupees on its own, while the Telugu dubbed version struggled and managed only 25 lakh rupees. The stark gap between the two numbers suggests that, for now, the film's pull remains concentrated among audiences already familiar with the original web series. Combined across both days, the film's gross collection now stands at 68.20 crore rupees, with net collections reaching 56.75 crore rupees.
The Team Behind the Film
Mirzapur: The Movie has been produced under the banners of Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment. Gurmeet Singh has directed the film, based on a story written by Puneet Krishna, while Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced it. The film brings back the franchise's most familiar faces, with Pankaj Tripathi reprising Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal returning as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu Sharma back as Munna Tripathi. Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Rajesh Tailang also feature in key roles, alongside Ravi Kishan, who plays an important part in the film. It is this return of familiar, well-loved characters that appears to have driven audiences to theatres from day one.
Hanuman Ansh Closes In On ₹100 Crore
Even as Mirzapur: The Movie dominates ticket windows, Hanuman Ansh, based on the life of Neem Karoli Baba, shows no signs of slowing down. On its fifth Saturday, or thirtieth day in theatres, the film's collections jumped 62.5 percent over the previous day to add 16.25 crore rupees. That a month old release is still pulling in double digit crore numbers on a single day underlines just how strong its word of mouth has remained. The surge has pushed the film's total India collection to 99.13 crore rupees, putting it within touching distance of the hundred crore mark, while its gross collection stands at 117.27 crore rupees.
A Devotional Film Made on a ₹2 Crore Budget
Hanuman Ansh has been written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, who is also a co-producer on the project. The film was made on a modest budget of roughly 2 crore rupees, which makes its near hundred crore India haul all the more remarkable. The achievement stands out even more given that neither big stars nor a large marketing budget powered its run, word of mouth around its subject appears to have done most of the work instead. It has already earned a place among the most successful films of 2026.
