Their upcoming historical drama, titled Bantwara 1947, is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 14, 2026, coinciding with Independence Day weekend. The director-actor duo previously delivered some of Indian cinema's most acclaimed blockbusters during the 1990s, including Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak. Despite the immense success of these projects, the two did not collaborate on any film for almost thirty years. Clarifying the reasons behind this prolonged gap, Sunny Deol noted that there were never any personal differences between them. Instead, they had been actively trying to mount a project together since the early 2000s. Rajkumar Santoshi had pitched scripts centered on historical figures such as Emperor Ashoka and Prithviraj Chauhan; however, trade producers at the time deemed those subjects commercially unviable, preventing those ventures from materializing.

The screenplay of Bantwara 1947 is adapted from Asghar Wajahat's acclaimed theatrical play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya Nai. Set in the immediate aftermath of Partition, the storyline follows a Muslim family that migrates to Lahore and settles inside a property vacated by a fleeing Hindu family. Upon arrival, they discover an elderly Hindu woman, portrayed by veteran actor Shabana Azmi, who steadfastly refuses to abandon her ancestral home. The narrative intensifies as Sikandar Mirza chooses to protect this elderly woman and honor her right to stay, even when it puts him at odds with his own family and surrounding social pressures.
Personal Resonance for the Deol Family and Dharmendra's Legacy
For Sunny Deol, the theme of Partition carries deep personal significance due to his family's roots in Punjab, one of the regions most severely impacted by the events of 1947. Deol shared that during his childhood, he grew up listening to firsthand accounts and emotional anecdotes passed down by his grandparents and relatives. When Santoshi narrated the script at their family residence, Deol's father, legendary actor Dharmendra, was present and became deeply moved by the story. Dharmendra was able to view the completed film prior to his passing last November, expressing immense appreciation for its sensitive handling of history and human dignity.
