For years, conventional economic wisdom suggested a one-way trade flow where India heavily relied on imported goods from China. However, recent trade dynamics are reflecting a fascinating reversal. While India continues to source various products from its northern neighbor, China has aggressively ramped up its purchases, loading up cargo ships with Indian merchandise. According to a report by the Engineering Export Promotion Council, China bought 74 percent more engineering items from India this year compared to the same period last year.
India's engineering goods exports registered a remarkable 21 percent growth in June. Powered by this strong upward momentum, the total export figure for the month climbed to 11.48 billion dollars. The apex body of engineering exporters, EEPC India, stated on Monday that this sharp acceleration was primarily driven by heavy demand originating from countries such as China, the United States, Germany, and Oman.
Stellar Growth in Shipments to China
According to the official data, exports destined exclusively for China surged by a massive 74 percent, reaching 361.47 million dollars. This follows a robust trend from the previous fiscal year ending in March, which had already recorded a substantial growth of nearly 37 percent in total shipments to China. This export expansion comes as a major relief for Indian trade, arriving at a time when maritime traffic through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. These logistical hurdles have significantly inflated freight charges, insurance premiums, and transit expenditures.
Engineering Sector Accounts for a Quarter of Total Exports
Analyzing the first quarter of the current fiscal year covering April to June, engineering exports expanded by 18.09 percent to reach 34.14 billion dollars, up from 28.91 billion dollars during the corresponding period last year. The engineering sector alone accounts for more than a quarter of India's total merchandise shipments. The United States remains the single largest global market for Indian engineering goods, with shipments worth 1.95 billion dollars dispatched in June alone. Meanwhile, exports to Oman experienced an extraordinary fourfold jump, touching approximately 259 million dollars.
EEPC India Chairman Pankaj Chadha noted that despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and crises in West Asia and the Middle East, the sector has maintained its resilient stance. He pointed out that monthly engineering exports have successfully crossed the 10-billion-dollar mark for three consecutive months, though sustained government support will be essential to maintain this trajectory moving forward.
Product Categories and Regional Trends
The report highlights that out of 34 total engineering product categories, 27 registered positive growth in June compared to the previous year. Although exports to the UAE and Saudi Arabia experienced a slight dip, shipments to Turkey made a strong comeback after facing steep declines last year.
India supplies a diverse array of engineering goods to multiple nations, including China and the United States. Key exported items comprise industrial machinery, auto parts, iron and steel, alongside metal-based goods like copper and aluminum. These materials find extensive application in China's robust electronics and manufacturing industries. Furthermore, India exports boilers, internal combustion engines and their components, machine tools, injection molding machines, and specialized machinery utilized across dairy, food processing, and textile sectors.
