The Knife Attack Inside Cockpit
The horrifying mid-air crisis unfolded on Wednesday, September 30, aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel. Inside the cockpit, co-pilot Hamam Al-Hammami launched an unprovoked knife assault on Captain Machchhar in an apparent bid to seize control of the aircraft and deliberately crash it. The assault left the Indian captain severely wounded, facing critical injuries while at the controls of the airliner.
The flight was carrying 174 passengers at the time, a group that included 27 children. Despite intense physical trauma and blood loss, Captain Machchhar fought back against the attacker with sheer willpower. During the intense struggle, he managed to unlatch the cockpit security door. The opening alerted several Israeli passengers near the front of the cabin, who rushed into the flight deck and overpowered the assailant, an Omani national identified as co-pilot Hamam Al-Hammami, ultimately neutralizing the threat and securing the plane.
Calls for National Gallantry Honor
Following the revelations of his valor, professional aviation bodies have called for top-tier state recognition for Captain Machchhar. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) formally urged the government on Friday to confer a gallantry award upon the flydubai aviator. Captain C.S. Randhawa, President of the Federation of Indian Pilots, addressed an official letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that the extreme life-threatening circumstances under which Captain Smit discharged his duty make him truly deserving of a distinguished national honor.
