HDFC Bank's incoming Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Anup Bagchi is set to become the highest-compensated banking chief in Indian history. According to a regulatory disclosure submitted to stock exchanges, the private lender has proposed an annual compensation package of approximately Rs 35.9 crore for its new chief executive. This unprecedented remuneration level sets a fresh benchmark across the commercial banking sector following regulatory approvals from the Reserve Bank of India. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Bagchi is stepping into the leadership role to succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan at the helm of the institution.
Comparison Across Top Indian Banking Leadership
With this revised compensation structure, Anup Bagchi overtakes all contemporary private banking executives by a substantial margin. Prior to this development, the highest compensation belonged to Ashok Vaswani, Chief Executive Officer of Kotak Mahindra Bank, who drew a package of Rs 17.23 crore in financial year 2026. The remuneration package designated for Bagchi stands at more than double Vaswani's annual earnings.
Axis Bank ranks next in executive remuneration among major private lenders, having granted its chief executive officer a cumulative package of Rs 10 crore during the preceding financial year. Bagchi's new earnings structure also represents roughly double his previous remuneration level, signaling a noticeable upward shift in compensation benchmarks for senior leadership within India's financial sector.
