In an extraordinary gesture of gratitude toward India's armed forces, a farmer from Chhattisgarh's Balod district has transformed a portion of his cultivable land into a dedicated memorial. Lokendra Sahu believes that citizens can never fully repay the debt owed to soldiers who make the ultimate sacrifice defending the nation. Driven by this conviction, he decided to utilize his own agricultural property to build a landmark honoring fallen heroes.
Memorial Statues Commemorate Major Battles And Anti-Terror Operations
Set along the roadside, the newly constructed open-air memorial features life-sized figures honoring martyrs from crucial defense milestones. The site features tributes to soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, extreme high-altitude deployments in Siachen Glacier, the Pulwama strike, and various counter-terror engagements across the country. Commuters and local youth traveling along the adjacent road regularly pause to observe the 18 statues, directly fulfilling Sahu's mission to instill national pride and deep reverence for the armed forces among younger generations.
Efforts Underway For An Official Inauguration Featuring Cricketing Icons
While all 18 statues are fully erected, an official inaugural ceremony is yet to take place. Sahu engaged with government authorities by writing letters and personally seeking appointments with the state Chief Minister, the Home Minister, and a Union Minister, though confirmation has not materialized. Having played competitive cricket himself, Sahu strongly hopes to host an esteemed cricketer to inaugurate the war memorial.
Pursuing this dream, he met cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar in 2024. More recently, on September 14, 2026, Sahu visited the residence of former Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, presenting him with a life-sized statue of the batsman and extending an invitation to visit Balod to unveil the soldiers' memorials.
Grand Vision To House 1,000 Statues Across One Acre Of Land
Sahu does not intend to conclude his project with the current installation. His broader initiative involves dedicating an entire one-acre parcel of his farming land to erect approximately 1,000 statues of fallen heroes from across India. He envisions the expanded site as a permanent landmark where future generations can witness the enduring legacy of supreme sacrifice and draw inspiration from the nation's bravest defenders.
