A tragic incident has unfolded in the Mainpat area of Surguja district in Chhattisgarh, where a newlywed woman passed away at a private medical facility in Ambikapur after consuming rat poison. The deceased, identified as Varsha Yadav, hailed from Ward Number 13, Pragati Nagar in Surajpur, and had been married for roughly 4 months prior to the incident.
Marriage Terms and Early Household Discord
Family records reveal that Varsha Yadav was wed to Ajay Yadav, a resident of Luraina in Mainpat, on May 1, 2026, through traditional social customs. During marital negotiations, the in-laws had expressly agreed that Varsha would be permitted to pursue and continue her M.Sc. higher education post-marriage. However, her relatives state that barely two months into the union, her matrimonial family began subjecting her to constant harassment and distress.
The WhatsApp Note and Emergency Hospitalisation
The situation escalated sharply on September 18 at around 12:00 PM when Varsha transmitted a WhatsApp message to her father, Umesh Yadav. In the text, she stated that she no longer wished to live and pleaded to be allowed to die in peace. Shortly after this message was delivered, her husband Ajay Yadav contacted his father-in-law Umesh Yadav by telephone to announce that Varsha's health had suddenly taken a drastic downturn.
Ajay Yadav transported Varsha to Mission Hospital in Ambikapur, where treating physicians admitted her into the intensive care unit (ICU) due to her critical status. On September 19, Varsha managed to recount to her father that her matrimonial relatives were not treating her properly. Despite sustained clinical efforts, her medical parameters deteriorated further, leading to her demise on Tuesday morning.
Allegations of Physical Abuse and Strangling
In his formal statement submitted to investigating authorities, Varsha's father Umesh Yadav placed grave accusations of ongoing cruelty against her matrimonial relatives. He disclosed that on September 15, Varsha had communicated her ordeal over a phone call, alleging that her husband had climbed onto her stomach and tried to strangle her. Furthermore, the maternal family members maintained that visible injury marks were present on her body.
Police Investigation and Pending Autopsy Findings
Upon receiving notification of the casualty, police personnel reached the location to record witness statements from the grieving family. In addition to allegations of violent beatings, the maternal side raised claims regarding financial transactions and harassment. Law enforcement personnel have initiated an inquiry based on the complaint, stating that formal proceedings will advance once the autopsy findings confirm the precise medical cause of death.
