Ghankanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the gruesome mass murder of five individuals inside a commercial hotel in Guwahati, died following an armed confrontation with the police in Sivasagar district. The incident took place while an escort team was transporting him from Guwahati Central Jail to Sivasagar for interrogation in connection with a separate 2024 bank fraud case. According to law enforcement officials, Gogoi stepped out of the police vehicle under the pretext of taking a break, ambushed a sub-inspector, and attempted to flee with the officer's service firearm, triggering retaliatory fire that proved fatal.
Scuffle and Gunfire at Phulpanichiga in Sivasagar
The violent clash occurred in the Phulpanichiga area under the jurisdiction of Sivasagar district. Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia detailed that Gogoi was being escorted after legal formalities to face proceedings in an older financial fraud investigation. During the transit, Gogoi requested the escort personnel to temporarily halt the vehicle so he could step out. As soon as he exited the transport, he launched an unexpected physical assault on Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma, attempting to overpower him and wrench away his service pistol. Sharma was serving as the investigating officer in the financial fraud case.
Police authorities emphasized that Gogoi possessed prior training as a shooter. Amid the physical struggle for the weapon, two to three rounds were discharged in rapid succession. Two of the bullets struck the exterior of the police transport, while a third round hit Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma directly in his right leg. In response to the immediate threat to the injured officer and the surrounding escort team, another police personnel opened fire in self-defense. Gogoi sustained critical bullet wounds and collapsed on the spot. He was rushed toward medical facilities but succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. The wounded officer is reported to be in stable condition.
The October 26 Mass Slaying at Hotel Vilas Inn
The deceased had been in custody as the prime suspect in the October 26 slaughter inside Hotel Vilas Inn, located in the Bora Service locality of Guwahati. That bloodbath, which unfolded around 9:00 PM, stemmed from a bitter property and commercial lease dispute between Gogoi and the hotel proprietors. Gogoi had leased the property through an agreement signed on September 10, 2025, with the Bharali family for a five-year duration at a stipulated monthly rent of around 1.8 lakh rupees. However, serious financial friction and disagreements rapidly escalated over modification and renovation expenses incurred at the premises.
In an effort to settle the escalating conflict, both parties scheduled a conciliation meeting at the hotel on the evening of October 26. Yet, before formal deliberations could even begin, a heated verbal argument degenerated into physical scuffles. Gogoi allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired upon six persons present in the room. The attack resulted in the immediate deaths of Bhudev Bharali, Helena Bharali, Debarshi Kashyap, Rinika Kashyap, and Narayan Das. The family driver, Satyendra Pathak, sustained severe bullet injuries but survived the shooting. The massacre triggered widespread public shock and demands for stringent police action.
Custody Transfer in Bank Fraud Case and Legal Proceedings
Following the hotel killings, Guwahati police mounted an immediate search operation and apprehended Gogoi. On November 2, investigators escorted him back to Hotel Vilas Inn to conduct a crime scene reconstruction and trace the exact timeline of the shooting. On November 3, police presented him before a Guwahati court seeking an additional seven-day police custody. The court, however, turned down the custody plea and remanded him to judicial custody instead.
Promptly after his judicial remand, Sivasagar police secured his custody to question him regarding a financial delinquency case registered in 2024. That case originated from a formal complaint lodged by Debabrata Borgohain, the then branch manager of Punjab National Bank in Sivasagar. Borgohain alleged that Gogoi had secured a vehicle loan, deliberately defaulted on the installments, and subsequently issued direct intimidation and threats to the bank official. Following his death during the transit encounter, forensic units arrived at the Phulpanichiga scene to gather ballistic evidence, while senior administrative and police officials initiated an official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
