Tensions surged across Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district following the tragic death of a 15-year-old tribal girl who had been repeatedly subjected to sexual abuse by a government school teacher over several months. The situation escalated drastically after the victim became pregnant and subsequently died during a botched illegal abortion attempt in the Chatroo region. The harrowing incident has provoked immense public anger, leading to demands for swift legal retribution and stringent measures for child safety across the union territory.

To register their protest and demand justice for the deceased minor, the Sanatan Dharam Sabha and Majlis-e-Shura jointly issued a call for a complete shutdown on Thursday. The strike severely disrupted daily operations throughout Kishtwar district, forcing shops, business establishments, and commercial centers to keep their doors closed. Public transportation services also came to a standstill, leaving commuters stranded. To prevent potential law and order breakdowns and maintain public harmony, civil authorities deployed substantial contingents of police and paramilitary personnel, especially in the sensitive townships of Kishtwar and Chatroo. Demonstrators gathered to demand robust child protection mechanisms alongside maximum punishment for all individuals involved in the crime.
Key Accused and Background of the Case
Investigations revealed that the primary perpetrator, identified as Khalid Ahmad Sheikh, was employed as a Grade-2 teacher who also held the position of in-charge headmaster at a local middle school situated in Bumalpora, Inderwal. Sheikh allegedly exploited his position of authority to repeatedly abuse the young student over a period of several months. Following initial complaints and evidence collection, Kishtwar Police acted decisively on August 20, arresting Khalid Ahmad Sheikh along with his brother. As law enforcement expanded the scope of their investigation, a total of 5 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the offense.
