In Odisha's Jajpur district, two men have gang-raped a 32-year-old woman. After the woman filed a complaint at Kalinganagar police station, police arrested both accused on Saturday, and during questioning both have confessed to the crime.
A trap built on a false emergency
According to police officials, the incident took place on Tuesday evening. One of the two accused already knew the victim. Exploiting that familiarity, he called her and told her that her husband had suddenly fallen ill. On hearing this false news about her husband's health, the woman panicked and, without delay, took a bus around 7 pm to reach Chandikhol. She had no idea that the story she had heard over the phone was entirely fabricated, designed purely to lure her into a trap.
Assaulted after the accused got drunk in a deserted bungalow
As soon as she reached Chandikhol, the accused allegedly took her to a deserted bungalow. A short while later, a friend of his also arrived there. Police said both men drank heavily and became completely intoxicated. After that, in the evening, the two allegedly gang-raped the woman together. Trusting the lie about her husband's illness cost her dearly, since it was that very trust which drew her to the isolated spot where no one was around to help.
Treatment at hospital, accused arrested in raids
The survivor is currently being treated at the Sukinda Community Health Centre. Kalinganagar ASP Suprasanna Malik said a police team raided the Badchana and Jenapur areas of Jajpur and caught both accused. The woman has demanded justice and called for the harshest possible punishment for the accused.
Accused confess during questioning, sent to 14 days' judicial custody
Suprasanna Malik said that during police questioning, both accused openly admitted to the crime. Following this, police produced them before a local court, which sent them to 14 days of judicial custody. Further investigation into the case is still ongoing.
A similar case had earlier surfaced in Nagpur
Earlier, a similar act of brutality had come to light in Nagpur, Maharashtra, where a married woman was drugged and then raped. The accused had also filmed obscene videos of the survivor and used those very videos to threaten and repeatedly sexually abuse her. Cases like these show that exploiting familiarity, intoxication and fear to target women keeps recurring.
