A disturbing double homicide that shocked the rural community of Punavali village in the Saira police station area of Udaipur district has been successfully cracked by local law enforcement. Elderly residents Laharilal Paliwal and his wife Radhabai had mysteriously disappeared on August 12, sparking widespread concern among relatives and neighbors. On August 14, after neighbors reported a pungent odor coming from the locked residence, police breached the premises and discovered their remains sealed inside a heavy iron trunk. Investigation revealed that the terrifying crime was orchestrated by their immediate neighbor, Kushal alias Khushi Paliwal. Facing overwhelming debt, Kushal spent nearly eighteen months planning a burglary that ultimately escalated into a cold-blooded murder. Authorities have arrested five key suspects involved in the conspiratorial homicide.
Discovery of Bodies Hidden Inside Iron Trunk
According to police records, Laharilal Paliwal and Radhabai lived alone in their ancestral home in Punavali village. When the couple suddenly went missing after August 12, family members and local villagers initiated a search throughout the area but found no trace of them. By the afternoon of August 14, an overpowering stench began emanating from their closed home, prompting neighbors to contact the Saira police station immediately. A police team arrived at the scene, unsealed the entry points, and conducted a thorough search of the residence.
Upon inspecting the interior rooms, officers traced the foul odor to a massive iron trunk kept in a corner. The perpetrators had meticulously stacked mattresses and bedding over the box to conceal it from view. When police removed the coverings and opened the trunk, they discovered the couple's bodies tightly stuffed inside heavy plastic bags and bound with adhesive industrial tape. The killers had gone to extreme lengths to seal the remains in order to delay decomposition detection and obscure the crime scene.
Horoscope Ruse Used to Gain Entry into the House
Under the direction of Udaipur Superintendent of Police Dr. Amrita Duhan, a dedicated investigative team was formed to probe the case. Because of his proximity, Kushal was intimately familiar with the couple's daily routines and vulnerabilities. He knew that Laharilal frequently lent money to local residents, leading him to assume that substantial amounts of cash and gold jewelry were stored inside the house. Burdened by personal financial liabilities, Kushal began formulating a robbery plot nearly a year and a half prior to the incident.
The co-conspirators chose the night of August 11 to execute their plan. As part of the strategy, accomplices Kishan Paliwal and Jeevan Paliwal visited the elderly couple under the guise of consulting them regarding a birth chart or horoscope (Janampatri). While keeping the couple engaged in conversation, they intentionally left the main entrance door unlocked. Exploiting this deliberate opening, mastermind Kushal slipped inside unnoticed and concealed himself inside the house bathroom.
Brutal Execution of the Double Homicide
Late at night, after Kishan and Jeevan departed and the elderly couple retired to sleep, Kushal emerged from his hiding spot. He promptly contacted his remaining accomplices—Chandan Yadav, Dilip Choudhary, and Vikas—instructing them to enter the house quietly. The assailants remained inside the residence throughout the night, waiting for the opportune moment to strike without raising an alarm in the quiet neighborhood.
In the early morning hours, while Laharilal was fast asleep, Kushal struck him on the head with a heavy hammer, causing fatal head trauma that killed him instantly. The group then waited quietly for Radhabai to awaken. As soon as she woke up and stepped out of her bedroom, Chandan Yadav ambushed her, clamping his hands firmly over her mouth to prevent her from screaming, while Kushal strangled her to death. Having eliminated both victims, the suspects ransacked the house, looting all available cash reserves and valuable gold and silver ornaments before preparing to dispose of the bodies.
Misleading Tactics and Mobile Phone Trail
Following the murders, the perpetrators executed a pre-planned deception strategy designed to misdirect police investigators and create false alibis. After stuffing the wrapped bodies into the iron trunk and concealing it beneath household bedding, they deployed a dual-phone tactic. The suspects placed their primary, daily-use mobile phones inside a moving vehicle that traveled across different geographical zones, creating cell tower logs far removed from the crime scene.
Simultaneously, the group relied exclusively on alternate, burner mobile phones while carrying out the break-in and homicides. To further derail the investigation, the killers confiscated the mobile phones belonging to Laharilal and Radhabai, keeping them powered on while discarding them along a busy highway. They anticipated that when forensic teams analyzed the victims' call detail records and cell tower pings, the search parameters would focus along the highway corridor rather than inside Punavali village.
Blue Grand Vitara and CCTV Surveillance Led to Breakthrough
Despite the sophisticated cover-up efforts, police surveillance units systematically analyzed electronic records and physical evidence. Investigators scrutinized hours of CCTV footage collected from public cameras along roads surrounding Punavali village. During this analysis, the movement of a blue Grand Vitara car caught the attention of investigators due to its suspicious timing and routing corresponding with the night of the crime.
By cross-referencing vehicle registration details, camera feeds, and localized mobile tower data, police established the identities of the suspects.
