Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report naming Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following unrest during an opposition demonstration in the capital. The police action comes on allegations of obstructing public servants in the discharge of their official duties and assaulting police personnel. Multiple other Congress leaders alongside participating party workers have also been booked, as authorities examine the specific roles played by individuals in the events that unfolded.
Midday Standoff Leads to 91 Detentions Across Parties
A total of 91 individuals, including numerous parliamentarians and political figures, were detained by the police during the confrontation. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had spearheaded the demonstration staged by the INDIA bloc before being taken into custody alongside fellow MPs. The flashpoint emerged after opposition leaders finished lunch at a South Indian vegetarian eatery on Janpath and boarded buses to mount an impromptu sit-in at Jantar Mantar. Security forces intercepted their movement along the route, triggering sharp verbal clashes between demonstrators and police officers.
Sloganeering and Sit-in Over Chief Election Commissioner
Protesting lawmakers raised slogans pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Amid the escalating demonstration, Priyanka Gandhi and several other female leaders laid down on the tarmac holding copies of the Constitution, prompting police personnel to physically remove them and load them into waiting transport vehicles. The protest saw participation from members of parliament representing the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and the Indian Union Muslim League, among several other political parties.
