Monsoon Fury in Delhi-NCR: Friday Forecast and Latest IMD Update

After persistent heavy rainfall across the Delhi-NCR region, temperatures have dropped significantly. The IMD has issued a detailed forecast regarding the expected weather conditions for the coming days.

The Delhi-NCR region, including Noida and surrounding areas, has experienced relentless heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. This weather pattern has brought a significant dip in temperatures, providing much-needed relief to residents from the previous extreme heat. According to the latest data provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), certain parts of Delhi and the NCR are expected to receive rainfall ranging from 180 mm to 250 mm by the midnight of July 10.

Rainfall Projections by Region

Meteorologists indicate that the eastern and north-eastern parts of Delhi, alongside Noida and Ghaziabad, are anticipated to witness the most intense rainfall. Furthermore, central and southern Delhi, as well as the eastern fringes of Faridabad and Gurugram, are likely to experience heavy to very heavy precipitation. In contrast, the western and south-western parts of Delhi, along with western Gurugram, are expected to see comparatively lower, though still significant, amounts of rain.

Weather Outlook for Friday and Beyond

The sky over Delhi-NCR is expected to remain overcast on Friday. Scattered light to moderate rainfall is likely across various locations, with potential thunderstorms and lightning expected from the morning through the afternoon hours. Temperature-wise, Friday is projected to see a maximum temperature between 33°C and 35°C, while the minimum is expected to range from 22°C to 24°C. In most areas, both the minimum and maximum temperatures are forecast to remain below seasonal averages. Overcast conditions will persist into Saturday, with chances of light rain accompanied by thunder during the morning or afternoon. The temperature on Saturday is expected to fluctuate between 35°C to 37°C for the maximum and 24°C to 26°C for the minimum. Sunday is also likely to remain largely cloudy.

Impact of Continuous Rainfall

Intermittent rain has been a constant feature in Delhi-NCR since Wednesday. The downpour began late on the night of July 9 and continued steadily until the following afternoon. This continuous rainfall placed immense pressure on the city's drainage infrastructure, leading to severe waterlogging in various low-lying areas and underpasses. The heavy monsoon showers on Thursday resulted in flooded roads, uprooted trees, and significant traffic congestion. However, a notable positive outcome has been the quality of air in the capital, which reached its cleanest level since September 2023. Some parts of the city recorded over 160 mm of rainfall during this period.

What this means for you

Across India: During heavy monsoon rains, avoid waterlogged areas and check traffic updates before planning your commute.

In Delhi-NCR: Residents in low-lying areas should remain alert regarding potential waterlogging and exercise caution with electrical appliances.
