A massive demonstration against caste-based reservations has unfolded at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, drawing large crowds of protesters who gathered with banners, posters, and saffron flags to raise slogans. The demonstrators are strongly demanding an end to the current reservation system, insisting that eligibility for government assistance and quotas should be determined strictly by economic status rather than caste.
Government Stance And Chirag Paswan's Statement
Addressing reporters in Patna regarding the ongoing agitation, Union Minister Chirag Paswan stated that if the individuals protesting at Jantar Mantar present their demands in a systematic manner, the government is fully prepared to engage in talks with them. He emphasized that any misunderstandings regarding reservation have the potential to spark widespread discontent among a large section of the population.
The Demand For Economic Criteria And Existing Provisions
Regarding the core demand to shift reservation criteria entirely to economic grounds, Paswan pointed out that the National Democratic Alliance government has already successfully implemented a 10 percent quota for economically weaker sections across the country. Meanwhile, the protests at Jantar Mantar have triggered varied reactions and debates among different political factions and leaders nationwide.
